First, if you’re like me, and your thirst for all things Hoffy knows now limit (and WHO is NOT like me, I can only wonder!) the Post-Gazette has a Hasselhoff Podcast - or, “HoffCast” - available. Now you as well as I can enjoy the dulcet, supple tones of The Voice of Hoff in the privacy of your own earphones. The public doesn’t need to know. Thanks to Jennifer for the link.

But never doubt that the power of the Pittsburgh blogger is deep and mighty: Bitchery reader Michelle sent me a link to yet another Pittsburgh based blog, wherein the art of the day via eBay is fruity-licious. Literally. Between that guy and this dude, and OMG this dude over here, I may have inadvertently stumbled upon the new and future trend of erotica cover art: eBay nudes.

Gee. Thanks, Pittsburgh.

PinkShoes:TheLegendContinues

Thanks to Kay Webb Harrison, I have more pink shoes news from Hampton Roads, Virginia. In a follow up article published in the Virginian-Pilot yesterday, editor Joyce Hoffmann took a look at the scandal du footwear, and talked to The Owner of Those Hot Pink Shoes, Candice Knilans, as well as the photographer who shot the image. And you know me - I’m a total sucker for behind-the-scenes info.

She “wanted to look dazzling,” according to the report, for her husband, who was deployed to Iraq six months after they were married. For those who questioned whether the shoes matched the dress, alas, no, it seems not. But she did have pink sunglasses to match, and she wanted the color to “distinguish her in the crowd at pier side.”

First, from Lurker Stephanie: did you know romance novels make exemplary tools for self defense? Oh, yes indeedy do!

I am currently reading Charlaine Harris’ latest Sookie Stackhouse novel, From Dead to Worse and on page 146 the heroine, Sookie, uses a Nora Roberts hardback book to take down a bad guy!  And I quote,

“He spun, pushed Barbara at Alcee, and ran right toward me, knife raised.  I threw a Nora Roberts hardback at him, whacking him upside his head.  I extended my foot.  Blinded by the impact of the book, Sharp Teeth tripped over the foot, just as I’d hoped.”

I shall never leave the house unarmed (i.e. without a Nora Roberts hardback) again!

Screw high heels or car keys. Get yourself a hardback. You’ll never be bored waiting in line, and if a monster goes after you, chuck it at his hairy, toothy head!

And from Amy, When Candy Goes Wrong - the high fructose corn syrup variety, not the Malaysian kind. I need to find me some of these, stat.

Finally: Kate <3 Rene's Comics Du Jane Austen. “I shall leave my cravat on” nearly injured me for life. HA!

But this time, not on a book cover. Try the front page of a newspaper. Bitchery reader Kay Web Harrison thoughtfully sent me both the picture and the follow up letters that line up on either side and either cry, “Yay for teh sexy!” or “Down with the sexism!”

So have a look: this photo by Rich-Joseph Facun (additional popup copy here in case that link breaks) ran on the front page of the Virginian Pilot with the caption, “Candice Knilans waits for her husband, Petty officer 3rd Class John Knilans, to disembark from the carrier Harry S. Truman… after the strike group’s seven month deployment ended. More than 7,000 sailors returned on the Truman....”

Those are some new shoes, judging by the stickers and the pristine condition of the heel tips and shoe bottoms as caught in the photo. And they are pink. Shocking, hot pink. But in the “picture worth 1k words” department, what do they say?

DragonbornBarnes and Noble has a new video series on its web site about the cover art of books. This episode features Judy York, the illustrator behind a few bodrillion covers.

Some of the behind-the-scenes footage I saw in Marianne Mancusi’s Cover Story a few months back, but the shots of the illustrator at work were, for a geek like me, fascinating. Michelle Styles, Jade Lee, and C.L. Wilson’s books get some screen time, as do, I believe Marianne Mancusi and Eve Kenin’s cover art.

However, York’s discussion of Jade Lee’s Dragonborn in which she says she wants the model to look “powerful” begs the question: how is draped across some dude’s middle in a harem costume “powerful?”
