EIKAL: The Celebratory Giveaway of HOLY CRAP AWESOME

Book CoverEverything I Know About Love I Learned from Romance Novels is out in stores everywhere (or should be!), so let’s celebrate with HUGE GIVEAWAYNESS OF AWESOME!

So many authors contributed to EIKAL, and shared such amazing and valuable stories about their own experiences with romance that I wanted to celebrate EIKAL’s release with a GIANT BASKET of every author’s book that I could get my hands on.

PLUS, if you’re curious about digital reading, you get a choice of those, too (thanks to Jeaniene Frost for the idea!).

Here’s the deal: leave a comment, and tell me one thing you’ve learned from romances – silly, sad, serious, wtfish, whatever – and you’re entered to win.

This contest is open to anyone anywhere, including the space station (Hi Astronauts!), and I will ship internationally. You must be 18 or over, and this is void where prohibited. The comments are open from now until noon EDT, Tuesday 11 October.

What do you win?

Your choice of:

Book Cover
A Kindle Touch 3G

A WiFi nook Color

or

A Sony Reader PRS-T1BC with WiFi

This contest is open to anyone worldwide where permitted, but it is the winner’s responsibility to make sure the device selected will work in their location.

BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE. A LOT MORE.

I’m giving away books from every author whose words appear in the book, as well as some kind folks who have hosted giveaways of EIKAL of their own awesome volition. And books that I think you’ll like. Hell, if it’s a romance that’s spiffy and it’s not glued down, it’s going in the box. I’m putting as many books as I possibly can in one box, y’all. I think this might require more than one box. Or a bigger boat.

Some have been sent from the authors themselves (thank you!!) and others I’ve been collecting. There’s a bobble head in there, too, and something from every genre.

Here’s a look at the Basket Of Awesome so far—and please note: as books come in to Bitchery HQ, I will be adding to this list, so there will likely be more. You might want to sit down. This list is unreal.

Note: some of these books, including 4 of the Carr novels, the Crusie omnibus, the Christina Dodd books and the Bujold hardcover are signed by the authors. Not like they all signed each other’s books, but you get the idea.

And there’s some EXTRA BONUS AWESOME:

You’ll get a copy of the three-armed lady!

And a Robyn Carr deluxe backpack, t-shirt and set of Jack’s Bar coasters:

And a Nora Roberts bobblehead – new in box and SIGNED by Nora!

I’ll be adding to this list as books arrive – and there’s always a chance for bonus swag. Can you tell I’m having a lot of fun putting this together? I’m so excited about EIKAL’s release – and I wanted to have as big a celebration as possible here. Thanks for partying with me.

I got the most intense set of giggles as I scrolled down further, and further, and further and the book covers kept coming.

I’ve learned that I should never start a romance novel at night, or I will not be sleeping, which is not a problem I have with any other genre. (Definitely a compliment to the genre)

  2. Ho’omaika’i ‘ana – Congratulations – on EIKAL!

I’ve learned that the world’s a pearl – that HEA are guarenteed!  It then inspires me to seek my own HEA.

  3. Ellie says:

I hate to even admit this, but from romances I learned it is the MAN’S job to pleasure the lady – it’s not up to me to take me there myself.  Changed the whole way I see my relationship, let me tell you.

  4. Cät von J says:

Wherever you are in the world, you might have heard me making heart-attack noices! That´s really a whole boat of awesomeness! I thought Sarah was kidding about the bobblehead – but no! Alas! A bouncy-headed Nora Roberts! How is that ever to be topped?

Oh, ok. Totally want to get my hands on that zeppelin of wonderfulness (btw: ALL MY FAVOURITE AUTHORS ARE INCLUDED!!!)
so. What did Romancelandia teach me? quite a lot actually. But the most important thing is that I´m the main character in my life´s movie. I tended to be like: “What can I do to make you happy? How can I make you love me?” But, oh wonder, that didn´t work so well. I wondered why my life couldn´t be like that of the heroines in the novels, you know, being yourself and being loved for that. And that´s where the epiphany hit me on the head – really hard actually!
YES WE CAN! I mean, I – I CAN. I can be the heroine of my life. I don´t have to be some minor character in someone else´s life. AND….can you feel the second epiphany swinging her little fists? Here we go: I totally can be me with all my flaws and peculiarities, and there will still be people who love me. Or if they don´t, its there fault for not seeing my wonderful personality.

Plus: the total addiction to some authors and their series made it impossible for me to wait till they were translated into German – so romance novels actually improved my English, too.

Did I already mention the Nora-Roberts-bobblehead-awesomeness??

  5. TheDuchess says:

    Now THAT’S what I call a giveaway…! O_O

The reason most people read romance is the HEA. There are no guarantees in life, but in romance, no matter how bad things get or how many problems tumble onto the characters’ heads, there will ALWAYS be a resolution. While I don’t expect this to happen in real life, reading romances helps me keep my hopes for a happy-ever-after alive. And some times (most times), hope is important.

    Congrats on the book release!

  6. DivineKittyCat says:

I’ve learned that a good (well, even a not-so-good-but-funny) romance can be a wonderful escape from pain. I can’t say enough how reading got me through all of my surgeries over the past ten years.

Even now that I’m done with the surgeries (I hope), whenever I start to ache too much I reach for a book- 9 times out of 10 a romance- to go hide in. 🙂

  7. Lisa J says:

Sarah knows how to throw a giveaway together.

My English teacher in high school was thrilled with my vocabulary words.  The assignment was to come to class with vocabulary words we had not been assigned.  Romance readers know we have all the best words.  She even mentioned she knew who I helped with the words and we all got A’s.

  8. Maureen says:

Congratulations on the release of this new book!  Wow, what an amazing prize you’re giving away.  For me, I’ve learned that it’s never too late to change your life to pursue what you want from it.

  9. closetcrafter says:

I learned or relearned my love for history through historical romances. The Outlander series, the Sandra Hill Viking series, the LaVerle Spenser-New Orleans Legacy story. These books pique my curiosity and then I have to go fact check or just read more about the time period or location, the food, etc. They also serve as a travelogue for me. Definitely a resource for future travel destinations as well.

As I was writing that, I thought back to when I really got re-interested in reading romance as an adult. It was during my dad’s bypass surgery. It was a way to pass the time during the operation and during his recovery. Romance novels have gotten me through some pretty stressful events in life.

  10. Joanne says:

My copy of EIKAL is on a UPS truck and I just checked the tracking number. It left Jersey and crossed into NY to arrive this afternoon to be read this evening.
Congratulations and I love the brown paper bag cover!

Number 1 lesson I’ve learned from romance books:
    Marry a Duke.
Seriously. There are so many, just pick one and live HEA.

  11. Tina C. says:

    Congratulations on the book release!

    What I’ve learned from romance:

    1.  New vocabulary
    2.  More about English & Scottish history than I would have otherwise known.  (I had a historical phase for most of the 1990s.  Of course, I can’t exactly verify the historical accuracy.)
    3.  That I deserve a “hero” who not only gets me and all my particular quirks, but loves me for them, not despite them.  And orgasms.

  12. Helen R-S says:

Wow!! That’s an amazing set of books.

As for what I’ve learnt from romance novels? I’ve learnt a seemingly infinite (and often amusing and/or mindboggling) number of euphemisms for the nether regions (both male and female)

  13. Virginia E says:

Congrats, happy sales, and thanks for the lure of more bookish goodness.

Romances taught me my HEA is what I chose to make it, and that no matter what, there is always hope.

  14. MicheleKS says:

Mega congratulations on the book release! Once I get my bills paid up (and the job I really, really want hopefully soon!) I’ll buy a copy.

But from romance novels I’ve learned two things:
    1) They’re the best thing to read when you’re going through something horrible in your life.
    2) And because my father used to say the world needs happy endings, and romance novels provide those for all the world.

  15. Reneesance says:

So. Many. Books.  I’m a little dazed and loopy by the sheer numbers!

What HAVE I learned from romance novels.  Probably that the sexiest thing in a man is a sense of humor and the ability to engage in witty repartee.  That certainly explains how I ended up with the mister.

  16. rudi_bee says:

Wow. Just looking at that prize is making my heart beat a little faster.

This is a really relevant question because this afternoon I was in a tutorial at uni explaining that I learnt about Machiavelli from reading romance novels and NOT Shakespeare’s Richard III. One by Julia Quinn, and one by Eloisa James.

  17. ~Lori says:

Wow, what an ocean liner of awesomeness!

What have I learned from romance novels? That great sex is more emotional than physical… but also some neat little tricks that played out well in my own entanglements. 🙂

  18. Booklight says:

I’ve learned there may always be someone who wants to bring you down. The “why” of it may not make a lot of sense, and they may not be particularly evil. The bad guy/woman always exists. BUT – with the love of a strong man who looks past my quirks and stands beside me no matter what, I can handle anything. We’ll get through it together. Well….that and a really good night of sex right in the middle of the badness (running for our lives, facing financial ruin, scandal all over the news, we may be about to die, etc.) can make it all better.

  19. Jennifer says:

Great giveway – and I am impressed that it is available here in distant Australia.

My library takes suggestions for purchases, so I will be asking them to purchase EIKAL.

What did I learn from romance novels? I learnt that there are a multiplicity of communites and different ways that people live their lives, and that this variety is what makes the world such a facsinating place.

Romance novels also gave me an interest in history, which I studied at University.

  20. Katie Ann says:

Holy crap that’s a lot of awesome.

I’ve learned that reading romance novels does not equate with low intelligence, especially evident in this blog and the awesome comment discussions that result.

  21. Lei says:

    Congratulations on the book release!!

Of all the things I have learned, these are my top two:

    1)  I have learned that I can be self-sufficient, independent, and speak my mind and also want to be courted and taken care of.

    2)  I deserve a hero who will love me because of my crazy and despite my crazy.

  22. Gabby says:

    Gah amazing giveaway!

I’ve learnt that there is an endless supply of gorgeous men over 6 feet tall with broad shoulders and slim hips, with steely eyes and dark coffee hair. I just have to find one…
Seriously! I’ve learnt that you have to work to find and keep love. It’s not easy and though there are happily ever afters, it takes a little time and effort to get there. But when you do, it’s totally worth it.

  23. Marg says:

    A-maze-ing giveaway full of awesomeness!

I’ve learned that it is possible to wake up first thing in the morning, have perfect hair and not be worried about morning breath. Passionate morning kisses – not a problem!

Thanks so much for making this an international giveaway.

  24. Tiblet says:

I learned that communicating what one needs and wants saves a lot of heartache and misunderstandings later and gets you to an HEA just a lil bit quicker.

  25. eleine says:

Amazing prize. I SO want! ^_______^

I’m actually waiting if they’ll have EIKAL here in the Philippines or if I should have someone buy it in the US and ship it to me like I did Heaving Bosoms. It was a pleasant surprise to find it on the shelves at the bookstore, but several months after its release. Still, the fact they had it was beyond expectation. Hopefully they’ll have EIKAL here soon too.

So now..what have I learned from romance novels? That EVERYBODY deserves as a HEA. You just have to work towards it. Whether you’re an impoverished duchess, a pregnant secretary or a cross-dressing cabin boy, there will be a hero (or heroine, if that’s your thing) to share it with. And that the hero/heroine shouldn’t have to solve all your problems for you, but they can certainly help along the way.

Well, that and the fact that there’s no force on earth that can defeat the hero’s Mighty Wang. Except the heroine’s Magic Hoo Hah. 😀

  26. Kaetrin says:

So exciting! Thx for the awesome giveaway Sarah! You and all the prize-donators rock big time!!

From romance novels, I learned that it’s not over until the happy ending. That might sound silly but what I mean is that when you’re in the midst of a trial of some kind it’s hard to see things getting better. But, very often, with time, things do improve and there can be a HEA or at least, a HFN. So, when I’m going through a hard time, I remind myself that the story hasn’t finished yet. I’m still hoping for a HEA/HFN in some areas, but others have definitely come through for me. For example? When I was 29 I thought I’d never marry. When I was 30, I (finally!) met the man I’ve been married to for going on 13 years now. When I was 29 I was nowhere near the end of my own romance story – I just didn’t know it then.

  27. L says:

Congrats on the release!  Can’t wait to read it.

Aside from an interest in topics that I NEVER would have thought I would be interested in, I have learnt that second best is not an option! I am worth the best!!!

  28. 17catherines says:

I’m not sure if this counts, but I’ve learned to carry my romances openly at my (very academic) workplace, and my colleagues have learned that reading romances definitely does not make me stupid.

  29. Morphidae says:

I’ve learned that there is always hope. That no matter how bad things get, there is always hope for the HEA.

  30. Xay says:

I can’t wait to read EIKAL!
Reading romance has taught me that there are always second chances. even if you think you just messed up your own HEA, there is always a way even if it wasn’t the one you expected.

  31. Jennifer in GA says:

I’ve learned that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover! 😉

  32. Zodiac Lung says:

I’ve learned that romance books make a wonderful escape from the day-to-day drudgery of my job, creating a path of sanity and release that keeps me functioning. I’ve also learned that I can become hopelessly obsessed with unrealistic alpha males and dream of creatures like Jericho Barrons night after night, unless I can latch on to a new book fast enough. I’ve learned important life lessons as well…like, hope strengthens, fear kills. Never give up.  Also, erotica is great for my husband!

  33. Camilla says:

    wow!!!!!! What a great giveaway.
I learned history (actually passed a history of Russia test once after reading early Susan Johnson……..and that good guys really do exist.Don’t give up and DON’T settle!!!

  34. Laura (in PA) says:

Holy crap! I was just sitting here stewing because I pre-ordered my copy of EIKAL a month ago, and I got an email from B&N the other day saying it wasn’t shipping because the release date has been pushed back. WTF is that about?

Anyway, now there’s a big smile on my face. What an amazing prize!

I’ve learned many things from romance novels. To name a few: being in love can be fun! In fact, it should be; same goes with sex; there should always be respect as well as love, on both sides of a relationship; whenever there’s a dog, hijinks will ensue; and there’s nothing wrong with getting a warm fuzzy from a HEA.

Thanks for doing this, Sarah. You’re the best. I’m sure your book is, too – I hope I actually get mine, so I can find out.

  35. Galadriel says:

One thing I have learned from romance is that no matter what, no matter the obstacles, the frustrations, the werepack dynamics, the social structures standing in the way, the legion of shirts and blouses ripped, the number of muscles rippling, the cads cadding it up, the villains twirling moustaches, the batch of secret billionaire babies floating around, there’s always a HEA coming. If it’s not yet happy, it’s not yet the end. Good words for life. *nods*

  36. Ana says:

I learned from romance novels that Tall, Dark and Suspect of Murdering His First (Cheating) Wife (TM) makes for a much better husband than Blonde & Boring… What?

  37. Alex says:

I’m not ashamed to admit that I want to win this more than I have ever wanted to win anything before.  Boooooooooooooooks!!  Sarah, you know how to treat your readers well!

One things I’ve learned:  it’s alright to just be who you are.  I don’t have to be that chardonnay-swigging, hair, shoe & makeup-obsessed, pink-loving girly girl that a lot of UK popular culture and chick lit would like me to be.  It was so refreshing to discover that people actually wrote books about interesting heroines; people I could properly relate to.  Even though my personal life is a romance free zone, it helps me not lose heart that there’ll be someone out there eventually.

  38. Sarah L says:

I’ve learned that I deserve someone who is truly, madly, deeply in love (and lust!) with me, not someone who feels like they’re settling for me.

  39. Cheryl McInnis says:

Wow! Just…wow! These prizes are awesome 🙂
What I learned from reading romances is that if you really, really love someone, you can work through almost any problem together and find your HEA.

  40. Eliza Evans says:

    Holy giveaway!

I learned that I don’t care what people think about me and my reading habits. People who read romances aren’t stupid or unsophisticated.
