Man. I can’t wait to see it! I’d be going Friday night if I didn’t have a class. So, we are going on Saturday afternoon.
These books are just like Harry Potter books. They touched people’s younger, love…

I don’t watch TV at all very often, but I find it comforting to have it on while I’m unpacking. It could be some totally shitty show in the background--I don’t care. Last week, for example, I unpacked kitchen crap while listening to the dulcet tones of Martha Stewart channeling Donald Trump.
Well, last Sunday, while sorting out my clothing, I caught a re-run on the WB that snagged my attention. I actually stopped what I was doing and plopped my ass on the couch to pay full attention to what was going on. Two hot (and I mean HOTTTT) brothers who also happen to be demon hunters go around the countryside, tracking down and killing all sorts of spooky critters. The story was cheesy as all hell, the cheesecake factor through the roof, but holy crap, I’ve been sucked in but good.
And tonight’s episode, with a story that was basically a Candyman/Ringu hybrid? EEEEEEEGAAAAH. I mean, I knew exactly what they were ripping off--hell, I’d SEEN the movies this episode had stolen its ideas from--and it still scared the shit out of me. It helps that the production values are decent, and the effects were actually pretty scary. I’m now afraid to look in the mirror. It definitely doesn’t help that I already have really irrational fears about demons and evil spirits residing in mirrors to begin with. (Why do you think I wrote the cliffhanger I did for the last installment of my SASS?)
What show am I talking about? Supernatural, my friends. Cheesy TV at its best. When the fuck is the Season 1 DVD coming out? I need to see the pilot because I’m getting bits and pieces of a truly juicy backstory, especially the creepy dead girlfriend.
Oooohhh...nasties in the mirror (yet not physically present anywhere else). Classic gotcha territory.
I’ve seen enough of those that I always get the shivers when I look into a mirror late at night. More than once, such movies have kept me in bed desperately trying to find a position that’ll let me hold my bladder for another few hours until daylight, just so I won’t have to pass the vanity mirror in the deepy dark.
I saw the previews for the Bloody Mary episode—but haven’t seen the show yet. Hmmm...will have to check it out, cause I keep hearing it compared to the X-Files. I like cheese and horror, but can never catch a scheduled show.
Husband & I love this show. Scaring the crap out of our daughter is a bonus. The brothers are yummy & the production values are good. Loved the one about the boy drowned in a lake.
I’m one of those folks who waits for the DVD rather than making time to watch the show when it’s on, so I’ll look for this one next year. I think the last TV show I worked my schedule around was Firefly, which was well worth the effort. Nathan Fillion....mmmmmmm....
Have you seen the new Night Stalker episodes yet? I’m wondering what you think of that guy. The wife and I are still partial to Darren McGavin (the original Night Stalker), but we’re old farts.
My whole crowed is just happy that “Dean” from Gilmore Girls (which even our husbands and boyfriends are addicted to) not only got his own series, but that it’s a good series! What were the odds of that? Though we’re all freaked out by the fact that he’s not “Dean” on the show, his brother is. Just sounds wrong every time he says it.
I just wish Supernatural wasn’t on at the same time as My Name is Earl AND House! Grrrrrrrrrrrr. I don’t watch all that much TV, and pretty much everything worth watching is on Tuesday night (most of it at 9pm), which pretty much means I watch even less than I’m inclined to . . . Tivo, what I need is Tivo (the expensive one that lets you watch one show while taping another . . .).
I’ve watched Supernatural a couple of times and, like you said, it’s totally derivative of other stuff. But even knowing it’s put several influences in a blender and pureed them into a gloopy substance hasn’t stopped me from drinking it right down - and pausing it when my daughter’s in the room because it is scary.
I was wondering about this with books earlier this week: why is it that in some instances I totally disdain something for so blatantly copying earlier works and at other times I lap it up and go back for more?
And am I alone in this display of inconsistency?
No, fiveandfour, you aren’t alone. My boyfriend was indignant over the Ring/Candyman rip-offs in las tnight’s Supernatural and I was all, “it’s just story-telling, all story-telling is derivative.”
Supernatural, oh man, I swear, the Dean charcater is the distilled, perfected version of every guy I dated in high school (and the one I married after--ahem, and later divorced. You’d think I’d be over it by now, but no, the car, the attitude and the heavy metal still suck me in every week, waiting, just waiting to see him be an asshole. It’s so deliciously good.
People are also already ready writing fanfic for the show, even really dritywrongbad slash.
A girl could really ask for more out of a TV show.
For those of you who aren’t able to catch Supernatural when it airs on Tuesday nights, the WB is also airing repeats on Sunday afternoons, 5PM Eastern Time--at least, my local affiliate does. You might want to check it out.
Also, the show’s official site is sorta cool.
>will have to check it out, cause I keep hearing it compared to the X-Files. I like cheese and horror
The comparison could be because both shows were/are filmed in Vancouver, BC and area. Well, okay the last season of X-Files sucked but we all know it’s ‘cause they moved their production back down to LA ... All that dry sunny weather? Tch.
It’s cool to catch glimpses of well-known locations around here in Supernatural, and I’m hoping to run across some of their film crew one day. The two brothers are cute and all, but the car? *Totally* hot ...

I actually disliked the “Supernatural” pilot very much. Enough cheese to choke you. However, the episode about the demon possessing people and crashing planes? Loved it.
I liked that this week we found out there is more to the dead girlfriend than just plain old ghosty shenanigans. Somehow little bro had visions. What’s that about?
For the “Earl” fans...I discovered they rebroadcasted the first 3 episodes on Saturday. Is that going to be a regular thing?? I hope so! Tuesday nights at 9 are chockful of fab shows. My TiVo can’t keep up!
Whoa, hey, that site for Supernatural is pretty cool.
And fiveandfour: you’re definitely not alone in your inconsistency when it comes to forgiving certain artists for being derivative while being punishingly critical of others. I do it across the board--books, music, movies, TV shows. F’rinstance, it drives me nuts that so many nu-metal bands are ripping off Tool, but for some reason, I can forgive Interpol for ripping of Joy Division. Stranger in My Arms gets a pass for mangling The Return of Martin Guerre, but Disney didn’t get the same leeway for The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Near as I can tell, as long as I enjoy the work and get caught up in the storytelling or music, then I don’t necessarily care who gets ripped off.
And dude: The car? HOT.
Fanfic: Seriously, my first thought within 2 minutes of watching that one episode was “AGH, TWINCEST!” OK, they’re not twins, but I was sure there was going to be incest slash within two seconds, because there was no way this series can escape it.
I’m just dying for the freaking Season 1 DVD to arrive already.
