Thanks to Joanna for the heads up: Bitch Magazine is in danger of folding. Oh, HELLS No.
But yes, the folks who run it need massive help. Bitch is a not-for-profit, and their donations are often small ones from a slew of folks. So if you’re interested, head on over to make a donation, and watch their wiener (dog) grow. We, by which I mean the LLC, are donating, and I’m going to give away 10 subscriptions for 10 lucky commenters here in this thread. It doesn’t matter if you donate or not. I’ll pick 10 winners (Wieners!) - but please be prepared for a delay in the winner announcements, since I’ll be subject to intermittent internet access the next few days. Hey, more time for you to leave comments! Bring it on, and save the Bitch. And their wiener.
The thought of losing Bitch strikes fear into my feminist heart. Please, ladies, donate if you can. I will be.
Oh, and I know my name won’t be pulled, but if it is, please pull another. I’m already a loyal subscriber. Give the subscription to someone who hasn’t experienced the greatness that is Bitch.
It’s amazing how many times I have shelved this magazine and never looked at it (along with a host of others) but I am going to help the weiner dog grow too. After all, I own 2 of them and wouldn’t want to see another one “go hungry”.
It’s too bad that the industry is suffering. Wonder if they have tried e-publishing instead? I will have to look further into that.
Aack! I love Bitch SO much! I don’t care if I don’t win a subscription I just want someone to. The more people exposed to the sheer awesome of Bitch, the better the world will be.
Love Bitch magazine! I’ve never had a subscription (I usually steal it from the OB-GYN office - I know… BAD ABBY!) but I love their content. While I don’t always 100% agree with their POV, I love and respect that they are out there, doing what they do with integrity and humor.
It would be shame if they folded. I wonder if people are getting that much of that content from blogs like feministing.com now instead of the print magazine?
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of the magazine. I don’t generally read mags other than Consumer Reports or whatever I see at the dentist’s office.
However, I do believe in independent media and I think it’s a good cause, so I donated. My husband bought a llama at the same time on his laptop (through heifer international), and I also just made homemade falafel. Wow I really feel good now.
oh, i love bitch! and i’d love a subscription. i’ve been justifying not getting one by telling myself it’s actually helping them more to pay more buying it at the newsstand. apparently though, it’s time to get one, before they go under for good, and i just donated.
spam word: bill26. actually, it was 40 bills, and wish i could afford more.
I am so glad I wasn’t the only one to bring this to your attention!! I really hope they get the funds. Bitch saved my sanity (well, that and Bust) when I moved from Oregon to Indiana.
Really. You have no idea. NW In. in the early-mid 90’s. Vacuum of Hell.
I knew the Bitchery would rally if they only knew of the plight of this magazine of awesomeness and wonder! A tip of the hat (as Stephen Colbert would say) to all of y’all who’ve donated. Bitch saved my sanity on more than one occasion when no one else seemed to be saying WTF?!! about some pretty major issues, and I get a little misty looking at the issue that’s on my coffee table - thinking that it might be the last one.
I’ve donated too, and I already have a subscription…for those of you who might win one, I’m keeping my fingers crossed ‘cause I always get a little thrill in my bits (both naughty and nice) when I open my mailbox and Bitch is inside. So, all I can say is, GO WEINER DOG, GO!!
Bitch is such a terrific magazine, it would be awful to see it go out of business. I’d love to win a subscription, but if not, one is definitely going on my birthday list.
God, that would suck. Is it definitely possible to save them? I don’t mean to be a voice of doubt, but what if it doesn’t work? The alternative/ discordant voice could go missing.
taking19. More like giving 20. Like others, wish it was more.
I see Bitch on my supermarket stand monthly and haven’t picked it up yet. Don’t know why, it sounds great. I’d love to be entered for the subscription, though if that doesn’t pan out I’ll subscribe for myself (and one for my sister too.)
I’d love to be entered into the drawing. And I’ll have to see if I can scrounge up a little extra cash to give as well, because Bitch deserves to live!
This is terrible news. Bitch is such a smart magazine. Unique as well.
I let my subscription lapse when I realized I was skimming more than half of it (it’s very texty and occasionally a hair too strident/overanalyzing for my liking) each time it came in. But I think I’ll have to reup and make a donation because it’s not right that a magazine like this should fold when so many putrid ones thrive.
I’ve never read it, but I admit I’ve always been put off by the name. I browsed their website yesterday and enjoyed some of the articles though. The fact that it doesn’t seem to be fluffy at all is appealing. Bust strikes me as fluffy (another one with a name that puts me off).
Ooh Drawing. Count me in!
Bitch is awesome! I’m always flipping through it at Barnes and Noble. We need to keep these indies afloat! We especially need to help such an intelligence-driven forward-moving magazine such as Bitch from slipping through the cracks.
Do they even sell BITCH in the bible belt?
Yep! In Newnan, Georgia they do. But only at B&N;.
Thanks for the heads-up, ladies! I posted the info on my el-jay. I also dropped them an email to talk to them about the feasibility of doing a fundraiser at my bookstore, and I’ll be buying all the issues on the shelf at my bookstore and giving them to employees and customers in the hopes of drumming up more interest.
I would like to see the feds bail out Bitch, it’s much cheaper than AIG.
Well said, quichepup, and I completely agree.
Really. You have no idea. NW In. in the early-mid 90’s. Vacuum of Hell.
Yeah, Meggie, I have an idea—Johnson County, IN, from 1988-2002. I feel your pain. Although I have to admit, it builds character and an appreciation for some things one might take for granted on the Left Coast.
I don’t know how I never came across Bitch. Sad news, but I will definitely send some support their way. Feminist discussion on culture is nevr a bad thing.
I profiled Bitch for my magazine overview class last semester, and since then, it is really the only magazine I read…I love it and cherish and will be a very sad panda if it shuts down.
Thank you for posting this! Bitch is my favorite magazine, hands down, and it would make me cry to never have another one. I donated and sent an email to all my bitch-minded friends, with instructions to send it on, so hopefully we can help them make the goal!
I went to the site to donate, and got sucked into reading articles for an embarrassing amount of time yesterday. So much for my rewrites. Plus, I have a new blog to read so the procrastination can continue daily! Yay!
I would love a subscription. I’ve bought it at the newsstand, but I always wonder whether magazines make more from newsstand sales or subscriptions. Bitch says subscriptions are best:
Newsstand distribution is a losing proposition for independent magazines, now more than ever before, so the more people who get their Bitch directly from the organization, the better.
When you buy off the newsstand, a chunk of that money goes to the store and the distributor
It also sounds like the uncertainty of newsstand sales is a large part of their current financial crisis:
basically, a recent issue did not sell as well on the newsstand as others historically have, so a check that was expected from our distributor is not coming, and that—combined with the usual cash flow issues that plague the magazine industry in general—created an immediate shortfall.
Unfortunately I haven’t been subbed in ages, but I do love Bitch. My high school drama teacher was the one who introduced me to feminism. She was a real old school feminist. I still have copy of Women Who Run With the Wolves that she gave me for my18th birth day. She rocks out loud. Interestingly enough, she’s also the one who first introduced me to Bitch magazine. We still keep in contact via e-mail after all these years. I think of all the teachers I’ve had in my life she was the one who influenced the person I’ve become the most. I’mma go donate in her honor.

Nonfiction: I’ve bought it. Especially in college, there was usually at least one or two self-published books on my required and/or recommended reading list from the professor. I also got a few gift cards to a small bookstore that sold…
