Title: Dark Watcher
Author: Lilith Saintcrow
Publication Info: Imajinn Books 2004, ISBN: 0975965328
Genre: Paranormal

Disclaimer: Lilith Saintcrow is the President Superbitch of the Romantic Bitches. Me? I’m the Vice President of Vices. Full disclosure and all that. Make of this review what you will; I know I made every effort to read this book and judge it solely on its own merits.

Theo Morgan, much like Greta Garbo, just wants to be left alone. See, Theo is Special, and not in short yellow bus kind of a way. She’s a Lightbringer, a witch, and one with powerful healing abilities. Forced to live a rootless life for a long time--people eventually take just a little too much interest in her unusual abilities--she’s finally settled down in a town she really likes where she owns a store that specializes in New Agey witchcraft supplies. She’s even found three other witches to befriend and employ.

But all that is about to get shot to shit. Theo has caught the attention of the Dark, and a centuries-old Crusade against witches has moved into town. Lots of nasty things have made it their highest priority to turn Theo and her like into hamburger. This is where Dante and his fellow Watchers step in.

Yeah, Theo could be somewhat too perfect, but I still liked her.  I do think it was the world-building that really made the book come alive for me.  Many of my favorite books are ones that I can visualize in my head and I was able to do that with Dark Watcher.  Like for some reason I can still picture Theo going up to that crackhead’s apartment.  Or walking through the rain.

And Dante was just so different from a lot of other heroes.  He’s actually done nasty things in his past.

Anyways, I really remember alot more scenes from this book even a year or so after I first read it, so I figure that’s got to mean something.  Enough that she’s now an auto-buy author for me and I can’t wait for her Warner release next year.

Might have to reread the paperback when it gets back here.  Only read it in ebook form so far.

I really liked Dante, when he wasn’t obsessing just a wee bit too much about Theo for my comfort zone. He was hot. Short black spiky hair? Ability to kick undead creature ass from here to Sunday? ROWR. I just wished there’d been more revealed about his past. And I certainly didn’t dislike Theo. On the other hand, I didn’t like her, either.

OMG, I have a Smart Bitch Review! WOOOHOO! *must breath in paper bag*

Thank you for the excellent review, Candy. One of my frustrations is that I had a very short, steep learning curve once I started getting published; I read Dark Watcher or Storm Watcher and I wince in places and think, “Christ I could have done that better.” Like my continuing addiction to dialogue tags (she said. *snerk*)

Little secret: I actually don’t like Dante. I very rarely like my heroes, and he just didn’t thrill me. So I think I didn’t put enough of him in there.

Once again, thanks for the great review. It was a shock to see it, but a nice one.

Theo sounds like a breath of fresh air compared to Darren. You know—Darren Stevens. Dick York, Dick Sargent, they both sucked. One of them literally, as I understand it. Samantha—now there’s a witch. I remember when I was seven having to stay home with a cold, watching Bewitched and having to deal with teeny weenie first grader wood for Liz Montgomery.

I’ll shut up now before Lilith does something mean to me.

Oops. Theo’s the chick, Dante’s the guy. Sorry.

I really enjoyed this book, for one major reason:  WORLDBUILDING.  WorldbuildingWorldbuildingWorldbuilding.  I love fantasy, scifi, paranormals, whatever you want to call “new and interesting places to write stories”, and I read a lot of them.  I dislike nothing more than a world that doesn’t make sense.  This one, though… I felt like there was a long and involved history that came before this book, and I engaged with it immediately.  Loved it!  I just wished it was longer.

(Worldbuilding!)

For another cool witch, check out Kelley Armstrong’s DIME STORE MAGIC and INDUSTRIAL MAGIC. Her shapeshifter and ghost books are also good.

Congrats, Lilith on surviving a Smart Bitches review! I’ve added your book to my TBR stack.
