Another small chapter in the Dorchester saga: New York Times bestselling Dorchester author Angie Fox has received her rights back to her book The Last of the Demon Slayers and has released it earlier than originally scheduled as a Kindle book. The book will also be available through print-on-demand for those who want a paper copy.
Dorchester’s financial problems, according to Fox’s 6 November blog entry, had resulted in canceled orders, so she decided to get the rights back and release it herself as a self-published book. Fans had been asking for the next installment in her series – and she was able to get the book out early as a digital release.
Fox also hired an artist to create the cover for the book, and it looks very similar to her other Demon Slayer books: “It was important to me to keep the look of the series consistent. In fact, many of my readers haven’t even noticed the change in cover on this last book.”
I asked Fox about her decision to self publish, and it was mainly motivated by reader response: “I’m especially interested in getting the print books out there again. Since Dorchester’s issues in September, my print books have been stashed in a warehouse, unavailable. I get a lot of email from readers who keep going from store to store, trying to find one or several of the books. It’s not right. While I may not be able to get the self-pubbed versions on the shelves at all stores, my readers should be able to walk into a store and order a print book.”
Her book will be available for Kobo and Nook readers “in the next week or so” according to her website.
Savvy. I hope it works out very well for her.

Off to check out the series and purchase this one in particular. What is going on with royalties from previous installments? I’d rather not buy them if Dorchester is getting the money and not playing nice.
You go girl! I’ve had the pleasure of reading this book before the release. It is fun, funky, and endearing. Pirate the dog is adorable, and Dimitri and his troop of shape-shifting griffins, who have little to no shame with regard to their state of dress, are certainly easy on the imagination.

Absolutely, I’m releasing my own books. Since the SB fray actually got Dorchester to take down my reverted rights books, I’ve been working hard to get them all available in ebook format.

Congrats Angie! Good move. Hope you sell lots of books. I got the rights back to all of my Dorchester books and plan to release my first two Egyptian historicals on Kindle and Smashwords. I will lower the price considerably. I received a Kindle for our wedding anniversary and it’s wonderful.
Oh my agent has been great throughout all of this. We had an opportunity to sell this book to one of the larger publishers. But my readers would have had to wait longer before seeing The Last of the Demon Slayers. I couldn’t do it. My readers are too great. And my agent understood.

I loved getting to read it before the release and I can’t wait to read it again to see what changes were made to the manuscript! Hats off to Ms. Fox and her agent. Writers get to write only because readers support them. It’s great to see a writer who hasn’t forgotten her readers.
Sometimes kindness is its own reward. Other times, kindness reaps a boatload of cash. I’m betting that Ms. Fox will end up making more from this book than from her prior work.
