Title: Goddess of Spring
Author: P.C. Cast
Publication Info: Berkley Sensation 2004, ISBN: 0-425-19749-2
Genre: Fantasy/Fairie Tale Romance

Let me get the climax out of the way first – not very satisfying, but really, I can’t amble around verbally until I get to the good part. I cried at the ending. Could be hormones, could be that I was really tired and already emotional. But I think it was the writing – I cried at the end. Y’all, it was that good. It made the pregnant Sarah cry.

This might be the hardest review I wrote because I want to squee all over the place about all the factors I liked. Candy and I work so hard to keep this a fair, balanced, and damn snarky site and I might as well hork up a fluffy bunny for this review because my gosh, I loved this book.

Goddess of Spring is second in P.C. Cast’s Goddess series, between Goddess of the Sea, and Goddess of Light, and retells a myth you are likely familiar with, illuminating it in a manner that not only subverts the original meaning but recasts a lot of standard Greek mythology into femno-centric themes.

I loved this book, too!  It’s one of my favorites by PC.  So, so delicious.

Thanks for the heads-up on that book!  This is my favorite of the Greek myths.  To see it written with modern interpretation, and in a romance setting, is wonderful.  I’ll be at the bookstore this weekend, money in hand.

As for the comparison to actors?  Unfortunately, this jars me so badly out of the book that I’ll abandon it.  It has the same effect on me as man-boobs has on others.

I loved, loved, LOVED this book. My fave of her Goddess series so far. I loved it for many of the same reasons you did, Sarah, and I cried at the end as well (with no pregnancy hormones to blame!).

And mmmmm…Hades.

OHMYGOD(DESS)!  What an ass-kicking review!  And how totally refreshing that you actually “got” the matriarchal slant I gave to the myth(s).  During my research for the book I found it fascinating how much the Persephone/Hades myth had been twisted and changed by male povs.  The most ancient version of the myth had Persephone willingly going to the Underworld because the dead needed a Goddess.  None of this ridiculous rape abduction crap.  So I thought, “Well, hell (hee hee) I’ll fix that!”

Goddess of Spring was a joy to write.  It was like taking a vacation.  I love creating mature heroines who are sexy and eventual find their HEA - little girl heroines make my ass hurt.

Sorry the actor and mid-range wine naming bugged.  It was a Lina thing - what was in her head - so I hoped it worked.  It does make me crazy when authors compare heros to actors who make me vomit (uh, Russel Crowe - retch), too.

I am swooning with pleasure at my Smart Bitch A!!!

Oh, p.s. - I snot cried while I was writing the end of this book.  I couldn’t figure out if it was: a) beause it was damn good, or b) because I was shit-faced from all the wine I’d been swilling.  Glad you guys cleared that up for me.

I’m so glad you reviewed this book.  This sounds like something I’ll adore, but probably wouldn’t have found on my own.  I’m a myth buff, and the Persephone myth has so many elements that are intriguiging, so it’s like holding catnip out in front of a cat to know this story is out there: I’m now a little wild in anticipation of a great, big treat.

Wow, this sounds fascinating. I’ve always had a soft spot for poor Hades. I think he’s always been misunderstood. ;) I’ll have to check this one out . . .

OK Sarah - I went to the bookstore on my lunch and attempted to get Goddess of the Spring, but alas, they were out of it.  I picked up their last copy of Goddess of Light instead, then came back here to see it on your Currently Reading section.

Hmmm, Apollo - this should be good!

You know, ya’ll have me buying the books just to see—even the bad review ones.  The good one’s I am now hopping on ASAP.  So you know this one has just been added to my list for the next BN stop—probably next week.  Can’t wait to read it.  I am just coming off of a work-deadline-from-hell and I am going on a serious reading jag before I start writing again.

I just finished Goddess of Light, loved it, and recommended it to friends.  The other Goddess books are on my TBR list, but they just got way bumped up in line.  And wow, ya gotta love a mature heroine!  We can’t all be 21 year old gorgeous tall curvy (120#) brilliant virgin heiresses and/or princesses just looking for that 6’4” 220# tall dark handsome Harley-riding bodybuilding reformable bad-boy testosterone machine (and possibly sheikh or prince) who simply needs a woman to understand him and release his sensitive side, preferably during an all-night multi-orgasmic Kama Sutra re-enactment sex marathon, virgin style.  After all, don’t ALL virgins have multiple orgasms their first time?  Like six or seven at least?

But I digress.  A lot.  What was my point again?  Oh yeah, mature heroines.  They kick ass.  Gonna go buy me some Hades PDQ.  I need a new Car Book—I finished the last emergency Car-Stashed book, and there’s some serious waiting-room action planned for tomorrow.  Auto repair waiting rooms are so much nicer when you can read about hot godly amor.

So, PC, ever pay your mother back for the computer?

(as stated in the acknowledgements in the back of Goddess by Mistake)

Yep Nicole, I did actually pay my mom back.  By-the-by, the reason I had to borrow the money in the first place was because the asswipe I was (note the past tense) married to thought that when I “played on the computer” it should be the family computer out in the den where everone could see what I was doing.  Uh, no.  So I borrowed the money, bought the computer, put it back in the spare room, and got to work getting rid of his sorry passive-aggressive ass.  AND (you Smart Bitches will love this) when I divorced him he tried to gouge me for royalties for the books I’d written while we were married.  Fuckwad.

I really wanted to like this book. Really. I drove all over San Jose looking for a copy. I love the Hades/Persephone myth! Couldn’t wait to devour this book and when it finally arrived… I was so let down. While the author seems like a delightful person, I’m just not sure her writing style connected with me. It seemed very one-dimensional. Almost expecting the reader to do all the work and fill in all the blanks instead of getting to observe the characters developing. Too too many paragraphs with descriptions of things I could not have cared less about. What does the street look like in Tulsa? Or the condo? Or yet another some kind of marble veined room in Hades’ palace? I didn’t care. Yes, Narcissus smells lovely in the underworld. I got it. Those were paragraphs that could have been spent on plot or character. I guess some people love really intricate descriptions of garments and rooms (Edith Wharton comes to mind, although I am NOT comparing this author to Wharton) and roads. Not this reader, though. Maybe if I’d been expecting fluff I wouldn’t have minded, but it came soooo highly recommended…  I minded. This is the first book by PC Cast that I’ve read, and I don’t know that I’ll read any others.

I got this book due to this review and supporting comments ... and I should have taken the review more seriously.  Instead I read the end while I was at the public pool and seriously disturbed several people as I was blubbering at the end like many other readers.  In public!  I couldn’t help it!  I was so moved!

Anyway, P.C., if you are reading this, thanks so much for the great story.  I loved your heroine, and I wish her bakery existed so I could eat there and be served by Anton.  I also love your deft, humourous touch - I am so tired of reading romances and coming out feeling like I’ve been through a battle of blood, gore and violence.  This is feel good as it should be: dancing, eating, goddess showers, and such a great hero to fall in love with.  And the fact that you touched so many of us goes to show that you don’t need to have gratuitious violence in books to up the ante enough so readers care about your protagonist.
