I’m pretty sure it’s Love Once in Passing by Jo Ann Simon. There’s a sequel called Love Once Again.

Yup—agree:  “Love Once in Passing.”  I read this back in, oh, 1984 or so, and I STILL have it in my most treasured books collection.

Francesca beat me to it - the book you are looking for is “Love Once in Passing” by Jo Ann Simon.  The setting of the first book was Connecticut, and the sequel, “Love Once Again” was in Virginia.

The first book was awesome, the second one not so much.
