(I would have suggested “Romance For Dummies” but a gift like that--while possibly appropriate--would probably be in bad taste, given the circumstances).
LOL. Yeah, in that case. But hey, that’s an awesome book. That’s where I learned my romance…
Bitchery reader Jennifer begs for assistance:
I’m a bitch (though how smart I am is open to debate) who needs help finding a book before the search drives me insane (an admittedly short trip). Here’s what I remember about it:
I read it in middle/high school (late 80s early 90s, but it may have been out a couple of years by then). It’s YA romantic suspense and *may* have been ordered from Weekly Reader.Set in New England (I think)
She was spoiled and somewhat bratty at first.
She’s big into sailing and may even have a summer job teaching basic sailing skills to children. I think she was in high school.
He was a little older - maybe in college and has a summer job in her town.
She has a crush on the popular guy who, of course, turns out to be a real jerk
She keeps screwing everything up when she’s around the hero, and they really clash at first
There’s a scene toward the end where she takes her sailboat out even though she’s been told not to, there’s a storm, the bad guy is either in the boathouse or ends up on the boat with her. The hero, naturally, comes to the rescue.I will be forever grateful if anyone can help me out!
TSTL YA heroine needs ALPHA YA hero with a big hard mizzenmast! Bring it on!
I’ve read this book! I’m thinking it’s Judy Bloom, but that’s all I can remember.
I’ll anxiously await some smart bitch’s answer and rejoice with you in your knowing.
Could it be Sailboat Summer by Anne Reynolds (1983)?
The synopsis reads: “Mackenzie Lewis is forced to choose between her friendship with a high school basketball star and her love for the cousin of her best friend.”
I’ve read this book! I just don’t remember the title either!
That was the one I was remembering, Katie! Yes, YES YESSSSS!!!!
My word? Party35
*The YA Librarian takes a bow*
‘Takes her sailboat out...’? That’s a pretty snerky euphemism. I like it!
There seem to be a lot of symbolic sailboat scenes in YA… I know there’s a pivotal one in one of the “Austin” series, and in this more recent one I’m forgetting the name of—the protagonist had some health problem and was working at a summer camp, anyone remember the author?
