How difficult, I asked? What are you top most egregious historical inaccuracies?

Oh, boy… horror stories of historical inaccuracy… tricky question; I actually haven’t even tried to read a medieval romance in years; too many attempts to slog through the morass of shiny knights, distressed damsels, oversexed Saxons, and brawny Highland-types with excessively large.. err.. sporrans.
The main problem is that the vast majority of medieval or Renaissance romance are the Middle Ages filtered through nineteenth century Romanticism (which is basically the actual Middle Ages shorn of all the naughty bits and dredged in sparkles). So I’ve kind of blocked it all out by sheer force of will, selective amnesia, and the occasional blunt object (of course, now my roommate wants me to start reading them. And blogging about it. But that’s only because she’s evil).
Phew, I’m glad I write fantasies and contemporaries. I loved your post. As an ex-archaeologist (Greek prehistory mostly, but I had to do the other stuff as well), I cannot read anything set in antiquity. Drives me bonkers. Folks, they just didn’t look like Brad Pitt in Troy. I’ve seen the skeletons, and if you could slap flesh on the fellas, they’d probably look like junior high guys to you. The Egyptian stuff is the worst, the absolute worst. No, wait, the “goddess worship” trend that won’t die--that’s the worst. Junk history. For a good part of human existence (until...um...now?) women (and children!) were marginalized. There’s just no way around it. Sure, there were some matriarchical exceptions, but oy, vey.
It doesn’t generally bother me too much, usually. There are some books that are so patently anachronistic (and contemporary books that are so blatantly against human nature) that I can’t stay in the story, but mostly, I just read them fast and enjoy them. What a book ‘ho I am!
But if you mess with the 17th century French playwrights - which no one seems to do anyway, big surprise - I’ll start banging my head against things.
I have a friend who has a PhD in witchcraft. Oops. PhD in History and her dissertation/specialization is in witchcraft trials. She has had to tell her students several times each semester that the course is not to debate whether there really was any magic going on and if these people really were DA EBIL because all magic comes from DA DEBIL, it’s about the history of the witchcraft trials and who these women and men really were and why. And no, they weren’t all midwifes and healers and independent women. They weren’t all high on—what’s that fungus that grows in rye? I don’t think she reads medieval witchcraft romance novels, though. She has enough to say about the Crucible, that I wouldn’t want to get her started about Diana Gabaldon.
Her other era is Elizabethan, so movies like Shakespeare in Love and whatever the latest QE #1 flick is tend to drive her batsh**.
Though, actually, I think I’ll email my friend and ask her what she thinks about Gabaldon.... ;)
Ergot is what grows on rye (I saw something on a Channel-don’t remember which-that hypothesized werewolf stories were a result of ergot induced hallucinations). We actually use a derivative of it to treat severe migraines today.
My trigger is usually the medicine bits, which in a historical fiction I can usually ignore and go with the flow. In contemporary TV/movies it drives me bonkers. Corpses are never pink, yo, and not everyone is going to have straight up blood coming out their mouth. It should also come out their nose and be a bit foamy and diluted if it happens at all. Oh, my BP is up just thinking about it…
The one thing that gives me pause with almost every historical I read is how easily the clothes come off when the happy couple starts to get it on. If it took hours to dress, with the assistance of a ladies maid or two, how the heck can Mr. Hero undress her without her even realizing it while they are kissing passionately? I just don’t get it.
Other than that, if the story has me, I will happily ignore the historical inaccuracies, offering only the faintest “yeah, right” under my breath from time to time. I’m reading for escapism, after all.
The whole garden shower thing in Knight in Shining Armor drove me nuts, and I still think about whats-his-name’s visit to the dentist every time I’m getting my teeth cleaned.
Why didn’t you post this yesterday? I could have beat NaNoWriMo with my reply. I’ll limit it to these four, but I could probably think of a hundred others.
1. People didn’t have baths in medieval and early modern times, in part because they thought water was dangerous. And you know what? THEY WERE RIGHT. Water spread cholera, typhoid, and all kinds of nasty diseases that could kill if even a drop was swallowed. (They drank boiled water and wine mixed with water, both of which were safer.) No matter what readers think, the hero isn’t going to see the heroine as “clean” or “proper” if she bathes daily. He’ll think she’s batshit insane. Even in Victorian times when bathing became more popular, almost nobody bathed more than once or twice a week because bathing often involved heating the water on a stove and dragging it to the tub. Those lucky individuals in major cities who had hot and cold running water didn’t have the water pressure we had, so it could take up to half an hour to fill a tub to the level of six inches.
2. Despite this, people’s bodies didn’t actually stink, since they wiped themselves clean every day with a sponge and hot water that usually had been boiled. However, their clothing did stink and was also usually infested by vermin because for the most part it couldn’t be cleaned. Without detergents and dry-cleaning, and with the upper classes (about which most novels are written) normally wearing silk or wool dyed with non-fast dyes, outer clothing could not be cleaned to the level we’d expect it to be. Poor people might smell worse than the wealthy because they didn’t have the tools or time to clean themselves and often didn’t have more than one change of clothing.
3. Few if any brides wore a whitish dress in the West until Queen Victoria wore cream to her wedding in 1840. Before that date they wore colours - sometimes pastels, sometimes darker colours, and all but the wealthiest brides wore their best dresses (and often in black). Off-white dresses became popular after Victoria’s wedding but they were seen as a display of the family’s wealth, not the bride’s virginity, since it showed they could afford a dress she’d never wear again.
No bride wore pure white, however, until around the turn of the century. The bleaches necessary to turn silk pure white without damaging it didn’t arrive in the West until then. What’s more, no bride before about 1918 chose white over cream or ivory because she wanted to display her purity. Such an idea would have been considered unthinkably, unspeakably gross and vulgar before the war. (Incidentally, the first British Royal bride to wear pure white was Princess Margaret. Every other royal bride wore cream, ivory, or (before Victoria) colours, just like everyone else.)
4. Most parents expected to lose one or more of their children in their youth. Losing a child was not at all, AT ALL, considered unnatural or “the wrong way around”: it certainly was considered the most painful thing a parent could go through, but at the same time it was an expected part of life, as much as the sun rising in the east. Most families, even wealthy ones, lost over half their children. Queen Anne lost all twenty of her children; Hester Thrale lost eight out of twelve; the Pepyses lost eight out of eleven. But almost every historical novel I’ve read has every single one of the heroine’s children living to adulthood. Let’s put it this way: the fact that Queen Victoria’s children all survived was seen by some as a miracle, and that was 30 years or more after the Regency.
Okay, I lied.
5. The ancient Greek and Roman cultures shared many similarities (as the Romans imitated the Greeks in many areas), but the cultures weren’t identical. Don’t use Greek concepts in Roman times and vice versa. It’s like confusing modern life in Texas with that in 1930s Bavaria.
I tend to ignore historicals for the most part these days--unless they’re by a fave author or part of a series--not because of the anachronisms, but because THEY’RE ALL THE SAME! If i have to read another blurb about an innocent/fiesty/tomboyish/independent girl who is forced to marry her father’s (huge, mean [on the surface] and of course gorgeous and man-tittied) enemy and then falls madly in love with him, or the debutante/spinster who thinks she’ll never fall in love til TEH RAKE WHO NEEDS REFORMING comes through the door...*pukes*.
Anachronisms might make me go “wtf?” but then i’ll just shrug and go on reading, cuz i figure the author must’ve had a reason for writing what s/he did. As far as I know, most authors do pretty extensive research (it always says “thanks” to some expert in suchandsuch a field in the author’s notes) so i like to think any anachronisms were on purpose or something.

I can ignore a certain amount of inaccuracy in historical romance, but I remember tossing one book across the room. The author had her heroine digging up potatoes in a convent garden. In the twelfth century - at least 3 centuries before Columbus.
I would have been able to ignore it if the author hadn’t previously written a book set in the sixteenth century where potatoes were being introduced and were looked at very suspiciously by the hero and heroine.
I can handle small historical anachronisms, but other drive me crazy. I have a BA in history and can’t stand it when certain things are presented as fact. I really hate names that aren’t historical. Even worse is when the names are completely made up, such as Allegra. Most people had names out of a small pool to choose from. Parents did not go around making up names. I can handle a few stretches of the imagination, but easily verifiable facts that are wrong are just annoying. I really hated a lot of the Keira Knightly version of Pride and Prejudice because they changed things and made them inaccurate. Why was Lizzie running around with her hair hanging all the way down her back? That movie just bothered me.
About Diana Gabaldon, though, I know she does massive amounts of research for her novels and I’ve never encountered anything anachronistic, other than what was supposed to be of course. =)
I was a history major in college and yet, I love historicals. Even though ballroom scenes make me pause and think, “Stinky!”, I enjoy the escape, the uh, romance of the story.
However, the one thing I won’t tolerate at all is rape, which means most romances written in the 1980’s are off-limits for me. When I read an early Jude Deveraux, I had to skip through that scenes and continually tell myself, “1980’s. 1980’s. Thank God they’re over!”
When the hero rapes the heroine, it just turns my stomach. Perhaps I’ve been warped by all of my pro-Feminist professors, but I just can’t believe that a man and woman can go on to have a loving relationship after he forces himself on her. If I were the heroine, I’d go all Lorena Bobbitt on him!
I’m pretty burned out on historicals because they all feel the same (tho I kept meaning to read another Lydia Joyce, but haven’t since Music in the Night).
However, I do *love* to completely fall into a given historical period. And it takes more than costumes and swords to create a specific moment in time. Most often, tho, the inaccuracy that drives me crazy the most is the heroine. Just by being in the story, the heroine is the biggest anachronism of all because she’ll say, do, and think things that she has no business doing, saying, or thinking given the period.
Characterization will pull me out of a story faster than anything else.
I think anachronistic language pulls me out of a story more than anything else. (I know it did for the movie ‘Titanic’, fer sure). I can shrug off some before-their-time technologies or beliefs as an author’s ignorance or even a deliberate choice.
But nothing pisses me off more than to be happily reading my cozy little Regency romance, only to have someone say something like, “Oh, get real, Mary. . .” *record scratches* It just smells so lazy.
Ok, something that really bugs me is when an author does get it right and people go whaaah-- nasty. It doesn’t have to be really gross. For instance one of Katherine (AKA Maggie Davis) Deauville’s medievals had the heroine’s backstory to be a series of dynastic marriages which was not at all unlikely given her age at her first marriage and position as an increasingly desirable heiress. You would have thought from some of the reactions in RT elsewhere that she had been walking the streets.
I suppose if the author had made her a virgin widow the readers would have been more receptive. She also had another medieval where the hero was a right bastard but it was a good book because she made it clear why he was that way-- remembering also that Stephen, reputed to be one of the most genial of English kings of the period was also despised and ended up fighting nearly his whole reign because he was perceived to be weak.
Sorry, can’t give the titles except I think that the second one was Crystal Heart. I am pleased to see that her Medievals are in print again.
I’m working on my MA in archaeology and I’ve done a bunch of work in Western Europe. I can’t read anything Celtic before the 17th century or anything with Vikings without suspending belief. On the other hand, they can be really laughtastic when I ignore the anachronisms! Vikings mostly did not have horns on their helmets people! Picture being on one of those boats with a bunch of guys wearing big arse horned helmets. You’d be putting each other’s eyes out.
In a way it would be difficult to get everything right, simply because, in many cases, we just don’t really know for sure how people lived in the past. Even for cultures with documented history, not everyone is represented in the record and we can’t possibly know underlying emotions and behaviors. What the history shows is often what people SHOULD DO, not what they REALLY DO.

Whoa--I was going to write a long-winded Angry Archaeologist rant, but a couple of you fine ladies beat me to it! I love this crowd. ;)
On a slightly different note, I remember seeing “Dangerous Beauty” and thinking it was 100% B.S.
In real life, Veronica Franco did her bit to further women’s education opportunities in Venice, and tried to discourage girls from following the same path she did. In the movie? She gets off on every client, because she’s an OMG!NYMPHO. (Yet--mysteriously--she never catches any diseases off them. Not once.) I think it’s horrifying that such a complex, intriguing historical character was reduced to the Happy Hooker stereotype.
I sympathize with Jane Drew. Man, I can not read a romance where one of the characters is a brilliant doctor that has actual hospital scenes in it. For Hippocrates sake I can guess the diagnosis based on the Wikipedia description tossed in faster than the so-called genius doc. And I’m still a med student. Also hospitals are generally icky and crawling with superbugs which does not lend itself to me suspending reality for the nooky. Not to mention your beeper would go off way before you got the strings on those saggy, sexy scrubs unknotted. And then just imagine what’s been onthose scrubs all day. . . Not sexy.
The girl-in-disguise, feuding family book? “The Conquest,” by Jude Deveraux. One of her earlier, not as successful efforts, IMO. Somehow the shower scene in “Knight in Shining Armor” never bothered me. As I remember it, the heroine thinks no one knows about her shower, since she’s surprised when the hero joins her there near the end of the book.

Allegra isn’t a made up name. Claire Clairmont’s daughter, whose father is usually assumed to have been Lord Byron, but could have been Percy Shelley, was named Allegra:

I only know that the name is Italian, so I’m not sure when it first came into usage, but I would find it believable enough for a character in an 18th century (at the earliest) or 19th century setting.
Honestly, I don’t know why anyone would think it was made up. Is it because there’s a brand of allergy medication with this name?
I love historicals but really get bothered by the whole bathing thing. People they did not bathe. And everything smelled, when the author writes something about the place smelling nice, I just have to laugh. It was filthy, mice and rats and who knows what else running around.
Yeah, I don’t remember the chick in Knight in Shining Armor as knowing the men are watching her the whole time. Though once the hero tells her *every*one watched, she’s all “Naughty boy!” w/out even a slap on the wrist. I found myself thinking “Okay exhibitionist.” But that works for me. ;)
But the thing that gets me in historicals is when the guy strokes her smooth legs. :::eye roll::: And then in writing a short story set in 1873, I used the same phrase. Sigh. Edit away!
I shouldn’t have said made up. I know it is used as a name in Italian, but struck me as out of place in an English regency. I guess I just prefer the old standards when reading historicals. Amanda, wouldn’t be appropriate for most historicals, either. There are others, I just can’t think of them now. Not a big deal, but I guess we all have things that bother us.
I think an interesting thing about historical inaccuracies is that it’s often more about what *feels* accurate or inaccurate, rather than what really is.
As one poster pointed out - Allegra *felt* made-up, but wasn’t. Also, the Keira Knightly version of P&P was totally correct in showing Lizzy with her hair down. That was a popular style in the 1790’s (when this movie was set). But it *felt* wrong to the poster above.
I also remember an author talking about how she was taken to task by a contest judge because her historical contained the word “technology,” which the judge confidently pointed out was an anachronism. Except is wasn’t. Technology was first used in the 1800’s in relation to science and mechanics. But it *felt* wrong and no reader would accept it.
I guess the point is things we think we know about the past are sometimes wrong - and that sometimes we don’t even want strict accuracy. We just want things that *feel* accurate.
The thing about the smells way back when doesn’t bother me, because it would have been normal to people in that time and place. Your nose becomes acclimated to your daily smells and blocks them. That’s why you can’t smell your own perfume as well as someone else can smell it, and why a hunter smells an animal’s musk over his own musk.
Blatant anachronisms can yank me out of a story, but if the narrative’s good enough, I’ll accept almost anything.
Liv, preach on… excactly correct! We want to read romance, and escape. So we are willing to go Coleridge and suspend disbelief til it makes that break-screach sound because it feels wrong.
For me, I think the error is not in bathing everyone constantly (which is an error) but in failing to think about how people AT THE TIME reacted to others.
If everyone is slightly gamey because their clothing has bugs and dust, everyone has become accustomed to it over time and doesn’t notice it. So a hero making note of a lady’s cleanliness bugs me, too. But a hero noting her scent-- rosewater or lavender, for example-- makes perfect sense.
As a witch-- I’m less offended by bad research than idiots pretending witches ONLY exist in fiction and treating some beliefs that deserve respect like they are fantasy and nothing more. Make up magical stuff like JK Rowling and I’m cool. Tinker with actual ritual without showing respect and I’ll be very angry.
I don’t like people tinkering with other people’s faith, either. Make it pure fantasy or pick on something else.
For me, it’s the dialogue that drives me batty. I’m willing to overlook historical inaccuracies in a romance novel (they’re not meant to be textbooks, after all). BUT PEOPLE IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY DID NOT SAY “OKAY.”
There’s not much excuse for out of period names. There are lots of lists on the internet-- google 18th century nicknames and there is a library who has a page of 18th and 19th century American names. There are also lots of lists divided by sex (although names can “change” sex, see Shirley and Beverly) including some good ones published on the web by SCA and Renn Faire groups.
I wouldn’t have batted an eyelash at Allegra in someone born early to mid 18th century on due to the Italianate craze. 17th century had some great female names such as Aphra (Behn). No Heathers need apply.
I used to love to read the historicals about various native tribes, etc. Until I did my thesis on the Dakota and got a stiff dose of reality that could never be scrubbed away. In the same way, I just can barely stand to watch any show on television that highlights a social worker. Rarely are they portrayed (and yes I know about Tyne Daly) as anything but people who remove children from the home. Puh-leeze!
That said, the one “historical romance” movie that I had high hopes for in its own comic way was A Knight’s Tale, and boy did they fuck that one up. That young woman would have been locked in a room for the rest of her unmarried life walking around showing so much skin!
An aside: I looked up a fave romance writer yesterday: Pamela Morsi. She used to write really quirky stories with really quirky characters. The sex was hot and there was plenty of tension galore. Then she just stopped and started writing contemporary women’s fiction. I asked her why in an e-mail yesterday. She responded! Apparently, her contract was dropped because the romance genre was losing ground and she wasn’t able to find another publishing house that would pick her up. I wonder if one of the reasons that romances have become so formulaic is because there are fewer good writers finding publishers for their historic stuff?
Oops, that should have said up there: “because the historic romance genre was losing ground.”
Sometimes anachronisms really bug me. I once tossed a medieval (reign of Richard the Lion Hearted, I think) because a Scottish guy who was probably the hero showed up on page 6 wearing a kilt and a plaid.(He also had a fur hat with horns.) I screamed “The kilt and the plaid did not become seperate garments until the 19th Century!” as it hit the wall. I don’t know why that bothered me so much, as I’ve encountered worse anachronisms without wincing, but it did.
To elaborate on Darlene’s comment: it’s not just personal smells but ambient ones as well. I think if we were taken back to pre-combustion engine times, we’d be struck by the strong smell of horse poo being cleaned up-- and someone from the past brought to now would probably be taken aback by the pungent reek of gasoline.
Aside: there was a great exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, waaaay back in 1987, called “Hollywood and History: Costume Design in Film” that showed how then-contemporary aesthetics often influenced costumes above and beyond historical considerations (the two Cleopatra costumes, the one from the 1934 Claudette Colbert film and the one from the 1963 Elizabeth Taylor film, really rammed this home).

I often wish writers of historical romance would read, for example, Edith Wharton or other contemporaneous authors to glean what they can about the customs and restrictions of daily life in their chosen period. If things were as strict in 1870s New York as Wharton paints them, how could less circumspect behavior be allowed or even contemplated in earlier, more conservative ages and countries? What would Jane Austen do?
When public decorum was everything, it should be unthinkable for a fictional couple to embrace romantically at a ball, in full view of everyone. A disclaimer by the writer that the characters were determined to flout society’s rules is ridiculous and lazy. I understand wanting to make historical novels appealing or relevant to modern readers, and we are talking about romance after all. An effort should still be made, however, to be historically accurate in behavior as well as dress and speech. During Queen Victoria’s reign, piano legs were covered with skirting so no one would entertain lascivious thoughts about legs in general. So although we may want the characters to check each other’s tonsils in public, they simply would not have done so.
Ellis Peters was frequently criticized for not describing the unsanitary conditions and foul smells of 12th century England in her Brother Cadfael mysteries. Ms. Peters said people living in that time would not have noticed or remarked on what was essentially the status quo, so she felt no need to include the same in her books. In that vein, I am pleased when writers of historical romance have their characters dress in the morning without mentioning what for us is the obligatory bathing. They didn’t, and it is only our modern sensibilities that require squeaky clean bodies.
The howler for me was a paranormal, historical romance, whose title I mercifully can’t remember. One of the participants at a formal dinner helped himself to the meat on a tray held by a butler and put the meat right into his own mouth. If the other characters had expressed shock in any way, even silently, I could have attributed this to boorish behavior by that character. Instead, there’s a dent in my wall and a permanent ban on this author’s books.
You’re right, I guess my problem with the 2005 Pride and Prejudice was the setting. It was published in 1813 and written in the 1790’s. However, Austen had revised it over the years. I was expecting to see the early to mid 1800’s depicted rather than the 1790’s. You are so right about Heather. I put a book back because the name was used in an historical. If they can’t get that right, what else is wrong.
Language bothers me as well. I totally understand the “okay” comment. The worst for me is the movie Braveheart. I simply cannot watch it because of the inaccuracies. People in Scotland at that time did not live in the hovels shown in the movie, not to mention that kilts were not worn in the lowlands.
I get a bit irritated if, in a medieval-set romance, the aristocratic heroine insists on staying in a huff until the hero says he loves her, or she thinks it’s reasonable to want to marry for love. Courtly love was adulterous, doctors thought passionate love was a mental health problem, Thomas Aquinas wrote that
since the man who is too ardent a lover of his wife acts counter to the good of marriage if he use her indecently, although he be not unfaithful, he may in a sense be called an adulterer
and the nobility tended to marry for practical, dynastic reasons. I’m not saying that people never fell in love and then married, or that there weren’t married people who grew to love each other, but usually in this area the ideas the modern-but-supposedly-medieval characters express just don’t feel in keeping with all the medieval primary texts I’ve read.
I guess the point is things we think we know about the past are sometimes wrong - and that sometimes we don’t even want strict accuracy. We just want things that *feel* accurate.

BTW, the word “technology” was actually first used in 1658. I know because I had to look it up recently for my historical hero in my upcoming contemporary paranormal.
I think that’s why I give historical authors such leeway. I’m not going to go around looking things up, so I assume they’re right, even if it sounds wrong, because I happen to know plenty of instances where popular belief about historical issues are wrong. I’m more concerned with the spirit of the story rather than the specifics of the history.

Things were actually not as prudish as you’d think. Social climbing Americans were notorious for ALWAYS asking, “What would the Brits do?” when creating their social rules. And the rich British cits were nearly as bad, always trying to attain perfection so that their daughters could marry into the ton. The upper ton itself could get away with a lot more, despite all the books that were written about proper behavior. Those books were written for OTHERS, not for them.
The story about the piano legs is just that… a story. A joke made about the pitiful Americans and their attempt to make themselves classy. The people of that time simply weren’t as sensitive as you’d believe. And I think 1870’s New York would be the epitome of conservative society. More conservative than in any other time or place, certainly more conservative than Regency England. And again, more conservative for the upper-middle class than for the truly rich.
True, a viscount marrying his mistress might create some complications. A duke marrying his mistress? Happened all the time. Because they were dukes. Who the hell was going to shun the children? It’s all about societal stratas and knowing what you could and could not get away with.
I have an MA in history, which means my ass is on the line accuracy-wise when folks read my book in ‘08. *scaredshitless*
My big peave is how everything pre-1600 or so has witches and magic. Real witches. Real magic. Etc. It’s like an invisible divide that says “modern stuf = hyper-realism” and “old, old stuff = magicky bits.” Unless you believe in casting spells and reading runes in 2007, you should not buy it as a plot device set in 1107. And yet I am hard pressed to think of medieval writers who consistently employ magic-free plots. (Please feel free to make recs!) The science of the time was highly advanced in several parts of Europe and Asia (acids, explosives, etc.), but those might seem anachronistic to the same people who readily accept mystical explanations.
As for medieval vs. Georgian/Regency/Victorian, the organization of some medieval societies were much more tribal and less constrained than later years, especially among the lowest classes. Life was much too hard scrabble for folks to be overly concerned about a properly tied cravat or the correct way to address a single woman in public. I’ve found that setting plots in medieval times is easier in general: more chance for daring-do and compromising situations without losing one’s good name forever.
The other thing is about the bathing and smells, completely anecdotal. I grew up in northern Indiana within a large population of Amish. The Amish do not bathe as frequently, and they do not use perfumes or deoderants. My parents were huge auction-goers so I spent a number of summer days in auction houses, pressed between sweaty Amish folk who smelled a great deal like their horses. They didn’t mind; I did--but only at first. After a while it became normal. I tend to think that medieval folks would’ve been the same way.
I really feel sorry for the historical authors. On the one hand, there are enough well-educated readers out there who can be yanked out a story quickly when stumbling over inaccuracies.
But, on the other hand, as points out, if anybody really tries to go for authentic, there are inevitably people who trash it because it doesn’t fit romantic sensibilities. Seems like those authors are stuck in a lose-lose situation.
That’s why I can’t imagine myself writing an historical (unless it’s a steampunk). Admittedly, I use handwavium, but as long as I don’t go overboard with it, I figure I’m okay. I don’t think the historical authors are so lucky.
PS Then again, I’m sure there are more HR readers than SFR, so maybe they’re ahead after all.
As far as bathing goes… Nineteenth century women aren’t reading my books. They’re supposed to be enjoyable and sexy for modern women! Now, I don’t want an author making big deal being made out of how clean the heroine is, but I don’t want realism either. I seriously DO NOT want realism. Because here’s some realism for you: Victorian women probably took a full bath once a week or so, if they had a lot of help around the house. One bath a week gives a whole new level of funkiness to the fact that Victorians also believed that women were most fertile while menstruating. So unwashed period sex? That’s fer real. And I want no part of it, my friend. Not when I’m trying to relax and enjoy myself.
Despite becoming annoyed at the anachronisms I notice, I generally prefer historical romances because I’m even more annoyed by some of the things that strike me as unrealistic in contemporaries. The percentage of billionaires who marry their secretaries (after asking her to pose as their fiancee first) is probably lower than the percentage of dukes who married their mistresses. Plus, my image of a contemporary billionaire is Donald Trump or Rupert Murdoch, neither of whom is remotely attractive. The problem is that, as much as I may know about history, I know even more about how we live today, so there’s more stuff to be annoyed at if I feel the author has it wrong. Of course, what bothers me is very likely to be fine with most of the rest of the world.
and i’ve got a question for those of you with better historical backgrounds (i’m a med student): In a lot of fantasy novels, and romances too i suppose (i read mostly fantasy but I like reading this site), there is always a tomboyishly skinny heroine, who looks just barely female but for the fact that she’s the heroine and thus undeniably female to the hero...and the heroine somehow manages to learn swordsmanship, and then wield a sword. Not the fencing foils of later times mind you; but with medieval style swords, that are supposed to be made of iron or bronze and thus very, very heavy, and meant to be used with two hands (which they also somehow never need to do). Now, tiny women learning to fight usefully with giant swords, that’s inaccurate right? Could a woman of those proportions lift those things? I always thought those things would be far too big for a petite woman as the heroine somehow always is, never mind the fact that she manages to wear the armor with it (which is generally metal even in times before they had such things)…
oh i could sit here for hours listing movies with improbabilities and impossibilities...x-files is painful to watch for example (they could get a high school student to tell them about some of the more basic scientific concepts they miss for crying out loud!!)
Non, Nina, they couldn’t have lifted those swords. No for very long, anyway, and not with much accuracy or skill. Most men wouldn’t have been able to either. Which is why my gals use fire and knives…

I never have thought of Victorians as really repressed, because at a young age I found my grandad’s copy of “My Secret Life” which is this unbelievably trashy Victorian sex memoir. And apparently they were going at it like priapic bunnies in the Victorian era.
Also, the memoirs of the Duc de Saint-Simon about the court of Louis XIV are pretty fascinating - according to him the Duchesse de Bourgogne had her nurse give her enemas WHILE SHE WAS IN ATTENDANCE ON THE KING. She just sort of leaned on a screen and the nurse reached under her long skirts with a syringe. *gah* A detail I can’t imagine any historical novel author getting away with putting in a book - “Honey, how was your trip to Versailles?” “Well, someone peed in the stairwell and it got on my new shoes, and the Duchesse was having her enema again, but Mme. de Maintenon looked lovely in her [insert historically accurate costume invention here]. Oh, and my three-foot-tall hair really itched and my knees got sore when I had to kneel on the bottom of the carriage so the hairdo wouldn’t get knocked over. But other than that it was great! How was your trip to watch the public execution, honey? Did you buy any souvenirs?”
Every time I read a history book I am astonished at the sheer grossness of human history and I’m just as happy not to see all that detail show up in romance novels, as it is far from romantic.
Things were actually not as prudish as you’d think.
I was so surprised when I read a diary for my thesis that in the 1700s premarital sex was allowed and that women who had children out of wedlock weren’t ruined. Although it was presumed that marriage would follow it didn’t always.
Therefore, I’m much more willing to accept instances of premarital sex in historicals that are pre-Victorian. But by the Victorian era common perception was that sex was for marriage. If a woman had sex outside of marriage she was a prostitute even if she wasn’t.
Also, the idea that it’s the man that had to tell or show the woman that sex could be enjoyable is kind of anachronistic because it was most often the men telling Victorian women that sex was only for making babies and for male orgasm. It was the middle and upper class women who, in letters and diaries, revealed that sex could be enjoyable for them as well. Victorian women weren’t ignorant of sex they just didn’t discuss it publicly.
But I let such things slide because it’s a romance novel and the majority of readers accept and expect it to be the man to introduce the prudish woman to enjoyable sex when it’s just as likely her husband was telling her to lie back and think of England.
I with Susan above. Contemporaries annoy me far more, because I know more about it, and so I can spot the missteps and hand-waving quicker. There’s nothing like seamless Hal-like wireless connectivity to knock me out of the story.
It never occurred to me to be bothered by historical inaccuracies in a work of FICTION. I mean a blatant oops like a Camaro in 19th century for example would make me scratch my head, of course. To me reading a historical romance is entertainment, not education. I doubt the cavemen sitting around campfires telling stories were concerned about accuracy. It bemuses me that so many people can be bugged out over inaccuracies, though.
If you look at hollywood movies made before the Great Depression, you can see several examples of people “living together without benefit of wedlock,” which I think is also reflected in some period literature.
But that’s an aside, what gets me are gross misconceptions about the classical world. Greek and Roman mythologies are not interchangeable and a pox on the teachers who tell their students so!
It’s one thing to say “Jupiter, whom the Greeks call Zeus,” because arguable (and sometimes even paraphrasable) that they did so. But it’s extremely problematic. Just because they were both supreme (for lack of a better term?) gods doesn’t mean they were the same person.
And undoing this learning is nigh on impossible, due to the early age at which this fallacy is taught.
Don’t even get me started on Gladiator or Troy. I tend to hiss like a cat.
At the end of the day, I’m glad if it gets someone interested enough *to learn more*. But I am frustrated by the people who would take it as the literal truth.

This discussion makes me kind of glad I incorporated the Black Plague, anti-Semitism, and urban squalor into my happy little erotic romance. (Well, it’s pretty hard to gild the mid-fourteenth century.)
Yeah, human history is generally a squick-out. But I don’t think romance writers or readers should shy away from its unsavory elements if the inclusion of such elements adds something to the storyline or the characters’ development. Love and sex were able to thrive, after all, in the most unpleasant of environments. I find that rather heartening.
Phyllis, surely your friend realizes that The Crucible is WAY more about the 1950s than the events of 1692.
My first historical romances were by Georgette Heyer, and they’ve completely spoilt me for any other historicals. I think that the main difference between “good” and “bad” historical romances is threefold. First, the author has to get the surface, most basic period details right. If those sorts of things are wrong, then it jars me out of the book. Secondly, the dialogue must be convincing. I agree with darlynne above that authors would be well advised to read books written around the time of their setting. Thirdly, it has to feel like 1810 or 1870 or 1602 or whenever - characters must behave like people from that period. I want to throw books at the wall when I read of a “shockingly modern” heroine. Bah. A heroine can be an admirable character and still behave perfectly within the constraints of her society - which is why people are still reading Jane Austen and Elizabeth Gaskell and so on!
I have read and enjoyed many historical romances that break one of my three ‘rules’ above, but the very best ones break none of them.
Nina--part of the problem with having a “not-skinny” heroine disguised as a man is that more body fat can translate into more womanly curves. When I write cross-dressing heroines they’re slender or broad shouldered or square faced or taller than average because you see what you expect to see, and rounder women are harder to disguise.
This discussion has brought up one question in my mind: how do you know what is inaccurate?
Obviously, people who have degrees in history have a body of learning to draw upon, but for the others?
I’ll step up and confess that for a long time I thought I “knew” what was historically accurate or not because of all the fiction I read and all the costume dramas I watched. If I then ran into something that didn’t gel with those, I got irritated with the “inaccuracies.”
But recently I started writing my first historical romance manuscript, and I realized all the fiction and movies in the world meant squat. So I headed to the local university library and started to dig deep. I found that much of what I thought I knew was crap - or that even if it was correct, it was only correct for a narrow time and place. (I think alot of us think of The Past as one monolithic entity. E.g. if in one time and place in The Past it was inappropriate to have your hair down, that must hold true for all The Past. Simply not true.)
I bring this up because we’ve already seen things on this thread (names, hairstyles, weapons) that people “knew” were wrong, but turned out to be misconceptions.
So what do you base your judgments on? Other fiction? Your education? Or do you “just know” when something is wrong?
For people like me, who know very little history--and even less about the nitty gritty, every day minutiae of it--it’s usually enough that the historical details in a romance feel accurate even if they are not quite so.
But here’s the thing: if I’m able to wonder at the accuracy of the setting, I’m not immersed in the actual story. At that point, it really doesn’t matter to me as a reader whether there was research done or not--it’s the story telling that’s lacking. Ergo, the book didn’t work for me.
Then there are those times when I read the book in a state of almost hypnosis, and it’s not until I’m done and my mind clears that I wonder at specific incidents, mores, words, etc. used throughout the story. In those cases I really appreciate a note from the author explaining why s/he used them. [The one book I’m thinking of is “The Duke” by Gaelen Foley, and the historical note that appears at the end of it--anyone interested can read it here: http://www.gaelenfoley.com/book-duke.html I grew dissatisfied with later books by her, but The Duke remains a favorite.]
I love it when something in a fiction book makes me curious enough to go find out the fact behind the dramatization.

Education won’t tell you every thing that is wrong in a historical romance if they don’t write books about your specialty.
I wouldn’t be able to tell you what was inaccurate in a medieval romance. But I can make reasonable guesses and if I’m not sure about something I just look it up. If it bothers me enough to do so. I’m really lazy so a lot of times I just don’t care.
I know NOTHING about many areas of history. I often pick books about areas I don’t know about because of that. I don’t know which way a corset should go!
I love the above comments about job inaccuracies. I often seek out books that feature archaeologists even though I know it will likely be inaccurate. I suppose that dirt covered, single minded people hunched over a worktable taking measurements of stone chips with a pair of calipers is just not as sexy.

Thanks for the info on this—I’ve often wondered about marriage ceremony customs for certain historical periods, especially when the ceremony is represented as very close to those we have now. Speaking of which, can you tell me anything more about pre-1900 weddings? Like who stood up for the couple and was there a reception and who traditionally attended and what role did class or social rank play? Not that I’m asking for much, lol. But I’ve always been really curious about this, so any info would be greatly appreciated.
I don’t know if I have a coherent list of specific stuff that bothers me, but I do have one thing that’s pretty consistent (and actually it applies to contemps and paranormals, too): using history to justify violence toward the heroine or other women in the story (ESPECIALLY when the violence seems intended to titillate the reader).
I have to make a caveat here and say that I’m not talking about ignoring the different views of women that were held in different historical moments and settings.
I’m talking about taking a certain time period—oh, let’s say the Norman Conquest, for example—and turning the history into a battering ram aimed right at the heroine. Could life be brutal in Anglo Saxon England? Yup. But OTOH, think of what it took to survive during particularly disruptive, war-torn, or otherwise challenging periods of history. Like how people who successfully immigrate to a new country are usually among the strongest and most resilient. So if a book subjects its heroine to wedding night rape by the “hero” after he marries her off to his best friend, don’t expect me to believe it has anything to do with “historical accuracy.” Because even if something like that happened (despite the fact that the “lord’s first night” has been debunked as a myth), it happened within a cultural context that wasn’t all about a sexy alpha male claiming his feisty but off-limits woman.
Anyway, I think there’s a significant difference between representing different views of gender, sexuality, marriage, and love in ways that reflect the intricacies and values of a particular culture and basing a story on current ideas about how those issues were treated in the past. I’m not sure I’ve stated the difference clearly, but it’s basically about context. If you have a society, for example, that believes strongly in marriage as all about social stability and not about romantic love, it’s not necessarily because they’re backwards or heartless or barbarous. So if a book is set in a culture and time like that, I want to be able to see the logic of those beliefs and values, even if I don’t share them, and even if the hero and heroine don’t (in the same way we debate the wisdom of social customs in our own contemporary cultural contexts).
Robin, all I know about pre-1900 weddings is the part in the Little House books where Laura and Almanzo get married. She wore black.
My understanding of the pre-1900 wedding ceremony is that it hasn’t changed much. A Catholic wedding would have been conducted in Latin, but the vows would have been much the same. The Church of England wedding ceremony has not changed either. Once again, the vows would match modern vows for the most part. Some things, such as the obey part of love, honor and obey, may not be in modern vows, but that is easily found out by simply searching for traditional wedding vows. A couple did have bridesmaids and groomsmen, although I am not sure if they were called groomsmen. Weddings were conducted in the morning, ususally before noon and the couple had a wedding breakfast afterword. This mainly applies to the 19th century. Weddings in the middle ages, for example, would have been conducted very differently. In both cases, though, women simply wore their best dress for a wedding and it was not white.
The historian’s shorthand on the film “Braveheart” is “If it’s in Braveheart, it’s wrong.”
One generalisation which works more often than not. A fun film, but I wish it had been marketed as fantasy!
The Scots tend to go along with it for the tourism, as the film brought swathes of people to Scotland, even more than before. “Oh aye, that’s right. There never was a bridge in the Battle of Stirling Bridge” and stuff like that.
But don’t diss Celtic or Rangers.
I don’t know that much about history, but there are some things that bother me in romance novels because they are just plain illogical. A pet peeve of mine is the maid who is the heroine’s best friend and tells her how to seduce a guy she isn’t married to. Or the butler who is such a charming old coot that he gets away with doing whatever he wants and telling the hero/heroine what to do along the way - and nobody even thinks this is strange. I just can’t see that happening.
And don’t let me get started on pirates in romance novels. I’ve enjoyed a few pirate romances, especially those by Marsha Canham, but some are instant wallbangers. “A pirate of her own” by Kinley MacGregor is a very outstanding example of this type. Get this: the heroine is kidnapped by the pirate hero and locked in a room on his ship. A little later, he asks her about her favorite color and she says she likes yellow (I think). Anyway, not much later her room has yellow cushions and doilies and she gets pretty dresses in exactly her size. Not much later, the hero discovers she likes to paint, and of course he procures an easel and everything else she needs to paint pretty pictures. During all this time, nobody on the ship cusses at her or tries to grab her or is even a little bit impolite. The auther doesn’t even try to make her story just a tiny little bit plausible and I feel stupid for reading it.
I love history and I love Dangerous Beauty and A Knight In Shining Armor. But I also like fantasy and I think these works of fiction are fantasy so I’m willing to forgive a certain degree of historical inaccuracy. However, too much can wreck a story. One thing that bothers me is when characters are too self aware of their generation and they says things that are too modern. I see this a lot in movies set in the 1950s, especially Mona Lisa Smile, when the Julia Stiles character says she can be a well-educated woman and a mother. Sure she can but would she have said something like that in 1950? It sounds too modern or too much like what someone in 2000 thinks a woman in the 1950s would say.
I can put up with just about anything in my romance novels. If the story is interesting I’m willing to go with the flow. However, the one thing that absolutely kills me is when I hear modern speech in a historical romance. I’ve learned to live with Kinley MacGregor’s books bc most times they’re entertaining lol but I just finished Her Secret Fantasy and everything stopped when the hero (iirc) says “So are you going to kiss me or what?” This is, like, 1800 something, are people really saying this?! That stuff kills me, and even if that phrase was correctly placed, it still sounds strange to me.
As long as it’s not too jarring I tend to let modern speech slide just because I think it’d be a pain in the ass to have to write exactly as your characters may have talked and it’d be a pain the ass to read.
I have no desire to read a romance novel set during the Elizabethan era written using Shakespearean dialog so if there’s a few seemingly modern phrases in there then I let it go.
So, all those Bertrice Small heroines who bathe daily are pretty improbable, I guess. Unless they’re living in the Middle East in harems. Sigh. I guess I knew that already, but Small’s work is one of my guilty pleasures.

Things that annoy me in historicals:
1. Yes, the bathing thing!
I know they had dodgy bathing habits in the past, and yes, in a romance I don’t want accurate descriptions of the heroine’s body lice and BO. The solution? Just don’t mention it in the novel. Contemporary novels don’t go on about it every time a character has a shower and cleans their teeth (unless they’re unusually clean/dirty), so why should we preoccupy ourselves with characters’ bathing habits in a historical, assuming they were normal for the time?
It’s so annoying when the author goes to painful lengths to contrive ways that the heroine manages to get regular baths. Or, worse, when it’s casually thrown in that she bathes every day because unlike everyone else in the country, she has a proper sensitivity to hygiene.
2. Sexually liberated heroines.
If the middle class, Victorian heroine is as sexually emancipated as a modern woman, I’d like there to be a very good reason! Unless I’m mistaken, sexual experimentation before marriage, and with more than one guy, wasn’t saucy. It was slutty. And I find it very hard to like a heroine is willing to sacrifice her family’s good name and her chance to marry and have children (the only career for a woman) just because she feels like indulging in a bit of sex. There’s nothing wrong in a modern heroine trying out a few boyfriends, but in a historical woman, I find it selfish and slutty.
3. And finally, historical romances where everything is modern except that they live in a castle and the heroine gets to flounce around in a big dress and flout convention. That’s not escapism, to me. Escapism would be a reasonably realistic historical setting with a society that is appreciably different to today’s.
By all means let the lady yearn to be with the common stablehand, but could we please have some inner torment as she struggles internally with the conventions she was raised to believe in?! Could we not have the heroine from the Middle Ages roll her eyes at her contemporaries’ backwardness unless she has a very good reason to be more advanced than them.
Otherwise, what is the point of reading a historical romance at all?
Anyway, I think most of this has been said already except no-one has mentioned CASSIE EDWARDS. Just thought I’d throw her name in for fun!

I find all the eye-rolling that goes on in romances written by American writers very, very strange. I had never previously heard of anyone doing this deliberately (apart from clowns) and so I imagine it being a very undignified procedure and can’t imagine any Regency lady doing it (maybe a medieval one would, I’m not sure of their range of gestures).
Maybe it means something a bit different in the US from what it means in the UK, or maybe I’m weird and other people from the UK think eye-rolling is quite normal, but to me it sounds like a really theatrical gesture to me or the sort of thing that happens when someone is having an epileptic fit. I have the sense, judging from context, that US characters roll their eyes at times when I’d raise one eyebrow slightly.

Eye rolling in the US isn’t actually making a full circle with the eyes. Though I will admit to doing that a few times when I was a kid, trying to figure out what a character was doing. Lo and behold, I did it naturally. It’s a look up and to the side. Some people are even more indiscriminate, using the phrase for anything done with the eyes to express annoyance or boredom.

I really think there should be a new category of romance “Imagined Historicals” that aren’t really historical.
That would mean I could relax and enjoy the book, instead of picking (I’m a historian, and I’m sorry about that, but I do notice stuff). I know we have a fantasy category, but it’s mainly medieval LOTR stuff and that’s not my favourite era.
The bathing thing. There is some evidence that although they didn’t bathe every day, people who could afford it did have all-over washes every day. Every bedroom had its washstand and the fuss of bathing just caused so much disruption to the running of the house it wasn’t practical before modern plumbing was invented. But hot water was delivered to every bedroom every morning, enough to have a full wash.
Evidence is mainly negative (many letters and journals contain entries complaining about the stink of someone or a group of people - if they all smelled the same they wouldn’t notice, would they?) so even then some people were cleaner than others!
Remember the scene in “Witness” where she washes? (love that scene!) That’s probably more like what happened.
They did have deodorants and dry cleaning, they used a substance called fullers’ earth to clean garments that couldn’t be washed.
But characters swanning around like modern liberated women, taking the values of our time as their basis rather than the values of their time make me grit my teeth. I have a box where I put the books I’m done with and that’s where I hurl them instead of against the wall (which is festooned with miniatures and doll’s house stuff!)
