InterviewwithAuthorLoriArmstrong

by SB Sarah Friday, February 08, 2008 at 07:44 AM

So back during the ferret discussion amid the plagiarism discussion, I got into an email discussion with Lori Armstrong , native South Dakotan, award-winning mystery author, and keeper of some good cover juju the likes of which I haven’t seen since PC Cast. Seriously, Armstrong’s covers? Creeptastic, and appropriate for her genre. They give me the jibblies like damn.

I’m fascinated by authors who base much of their writing in their home states, especially when the state is one that doesn’t get a whole lot of attention on an individual level, and I’m fascinated by the sparsely-populated but increasing numbers of the female private investigator protagonists in fiction that isn’t paranormal-based. So I asked Lori a bunch of questions about South Dakota, bikers, guns, detectives and writing, and she was kind enough to answer them. I’m nosy, really, and I should probably work on that flaw.

Hey, Lori! Thanks for the great interview. My whole family is from the border area of Minnesota and South Dakota (near Marshall, if you know where that is.) It’s beautiful, hilly and probably the reason I prefer to be alone most of the time. *g*

For us, South Dakota was the land of fireworks, boat purchases, and exciting trips to Watertown!

Thanks for the memories.

I have a mixed response of respect and resentment for people from N & S Dakota (North and South Carolina are still called “The Carolinas.” They don’t mind it though.) Respect because it really is a life for people who are tough in a different way from urban dwellers.  And resentment for the way I was treated when I moved to Montana from California (and when traveling through the whole region, looking for a place to move).  The *nicest* reaction was kind hearted patronizing over their assumption we wouldn’t make it.  Only made it worse that we didn’t, that we were gone in a year.

As an Okie, I get much the same response from people. Those of us born and bred to the land understand. And Sarah? Thanks for this interview! I still have a Christmas gift card from Borders and I know exactly how I’m going to spend it! Lori Armstrong books, here I come! *throws on real clothes to go shopping*

Thank you for an oustanding interview.

As a die hard Julie Collins (Lori Armstrong) fan, I can tell you...the books kick ass just like the covers. I have posted on all three previous books and how good they are. I’m looking forward to Snow Blind and the new series.

Having grown up in the Hinterlands, (albeit a more populated region of the Hinterlands), the pride and love that Lori speaks with about SD is something I grew up with.

I appreciate the interview, as I’ve been contemplating buying this series for a while, but I’ve put it off.  I enjoyed her “voice” in the interview, so I’ll be picking up the books soon.

Oh...and Victoria?  I’ll be in Marshall next weekend and again in March for a wedding shower…

“beyond21” ~ unfortunately, dammit, I am.  sigh.

Awesome interview. I already know Lori was my girl for gun info, but dayum, she blew me away on this interview.
Yes, I’ve read her work and it totally rocks. Very much looking forward to the next!

Nonnie, that’s crazy!!!

Unfortunately, my last two trips back have been for funerals in the dead of January.

Ah Victoria, Watertown, that den of iniquity :)

Lorelie - I know many of us natives have that prickly attitude toward “newcomers” and sad to say, it’s borne out of our past experiences with folks moving here...and trying to tell us what to do, because it works elsewhere, so it must be right. Gets our backs up. Not saying it’s right, it just...is.

Nonnie and Silver - hope you enjoy the books.

Beth and Mechele thanks for stopping by--gonna miss you guys at RT this year!

Any other questions? Come on, don’t be shy, god knows I’m not…

I actually live in a rural area on New Hampshire, up in the mountains. There is a similar attitude about outsiders when they come here, mostly because they always seem surprised that the local shop is closed by 8pm and that the only thing to do. on a Sunday is go ice fishing.
I was involved in bike clubs in the past and I’m really interested in Lori’s take. I’ll be picking up her books in the near future! Thanks

Lori - bad news! The local Borders didn’t have your books in stock. Neither did the library (BAD library! Sent them a nasty gram). Shall we all say an “amen” for Amazon? “AMEN, bitches!!” I ordered them and eagerly anticipate their arrival. I can’t believe I’ve never come across your books before. They are right up my preferred reading alley. Kudos to Smart Bitches for getting you on my radar!

Fantastic interview, Lori. Of course, already knew you were a freaking awesome writer. But didja also have to go and be a stellar interviewee? Could ya just be a little less brilliant, please? You’re making my head hurt. (Yeah, yeah, first round’s on me at LCC.)

Love Julie, and you all are going to get a phenomenal treat when you meet Mercy in her new book next year. I’m not kidding, blew me away.

I have to say I gobbled up Armstrongs books and they are the best out there. I love her characters, the suspense, the “oh my gawd” how did that happen stuff...she has a long and wonderful career ahead of her and I am soooo totally looking forward to reading every single book.

Peace.

Geez,
what’s with the Lori Armstrong love fest??? You obviously haven’t listened to her whine for HOURS after she’s had too much to drink. . .oh wait, I think that was me. Nevermind.
hahahahhaha

Anyway, great interview babycakes!!! I can’t believe I’m not going to get to see you for a year. We need to work on that.

Oh, and by the way, I’ve loved Lori’s books FOREVER. As a writer she rocks, but as a friend, she’s even better.

As a roommate though. . .
hahahaha

I have mixed reactions… I loved the interview, and I’m coveting the books.

And I just have way too many books to buy as it is! *kicking credit card*

I’ve been tottering on the fence about these books because I really, really like the covers.  I think I just fell off on the go-ahead-and-buy-them side.
