Judith Griggs: The Google Is Our Friend, Not Hers

Here at the hot pink palace of Bitchery, fuckwittery does not ever go unrewarded. With the jaw-dropping hubris of Cook’s Source editor Judith Griggs’ assertions that Godecookery author Monica should feel pleased that Cook’s Source plagiarized her and should think about compensating them for editing her original article, it’s time for some hot steaming Google bombing.

I propose the following redefinition of Judith Griggs’ name:

Judith Griggs

griggs

Function: verb

Inflected Form(s): griggs’d

Pronunciation: gr i gz

1. To use content on the web without permission, then request payment from original author for rewrites and editing.
2. To remain ignorant of plagiarism, ethics, copyright, and asshat behavior.

Etymology: From Cook’s Source editor Judith Griggs’ use of Monica’s article from GodeCookery without attribution or permission, and from Griggs’ subsequent rejection and ridicule of Monica’s request for compensation.

Example of usage: “Why’d you get an F on that essay?”
“I griggs’d the professor’s doctoral thesis from her website, and I even cleaned it up for her and told her she should give me an A, but she failed me anyway.”

Alternate usage: “For tomorrow’s deadline, I’m going to griggs some article from LiveJournal but edit it to remove the humor and interestingness.”

Now, to Google Bomb, you follow these very simple steps to help popularize the new definition.

First, I created this page for the definition “griggs”. LINK TO THIS URL:

http://www.smartbitchestrashybooks.com/judithgriggs with “Judith Griggs” as the anchor text. The link should look like this:

Judith Griggs

This is friendly and effective Google-bombing. The more people that create a link to that page, the higher up in the search results the new definition will appear. See: Bill Napoli.

Any questions, please send them over or list them in the comments.

And if you decide to use and republish this article for profit, please know that I will come down on your ass like a cloud of raging grackle birds. The internet may be for porn and pictures of cats, but it is not public domain. Plagiarism sucks.

ETA: As of 8:10 am EDT on 5 November: our definition is #1. Nice job! You all rock. image

I posted it on my LiveJournal and told them to pass it on!

  2. Lisa Hendrix says:

I’m out in public and not willing to log into my blog from here, but as soon as I get home, I’m giving the lovely Judith Griggs a shout out.

  3. Margot Gentry says:

I helped!  🙂 Put my blog to good use, finally.  Also, my def. isn’t as cool looking as yours. :

  4. Doris M says:

Posted it on my blog 🙂

  5. Nan says:

You’re already number 3! I feel kind of bad for the Australian motorsports lawyer, though.

  6. James says:

It’s currently the #2 hit on Google.  It’s worth noting, though, that the #1 hit is for a different person who seems to be a lawyer involved in Formula 1 racing in Australia.

  7. Kiersten says:

Someone please educate me on how to make “Judith Griggs’ a link in tweetdeck. I’m not finding the magic button.

  8. you can just tweet it like you would anything Kiersten. Just paste the link in and add a comment if you like. I’m @jeffekennedy if you want to just RT mine, too.

  9. Kiersten says:

    Got it. Thanks!

  10. Lynne P says:

Contributed. It looks like it’s #2 right now.

  11. Arhylda says:

I know Monica, and she is a wonderful sweet person who totally does not deserve to be messed with. And is totally dangerous to mess with! So yes, ‘Judith Griggs’ is linked on my Live Journal as well. Thank you to all of the Smart Bitches out there.

  12. Peyton says:

    Dear Ms Griggs,

Taking an article on historical food and “correcting” the spelling of words directly quoted from medieval sources in the original vernacular =/= editing.

    Regards,
    The SCA

  13. Posted on my blog, so my Romanian readers would know what a bitch Griggs is.

  14. joane says:

I put the link on my facebook page but I wish it had an asshat picture too.

(I’m so stealing “come down on your ass like a cloud of raging grackle birds”)

  15. AngP says:

    It’s up to #2 on Google. 🙂

another25:  Another 25 links should it get it to #1

  16. ironlesbian2 says:

I will tweet it when I get home from chemo as I have virtually no idea how to tweet it from the iPad.

  17. Noelinya says:

This story is in all Google’s results when you search “cooks source”. And on their page on Facebook there are a lot of messages about this too.

  18. Noelinya says:

Oops, forgot to tel cookssource.com seems to be down

  19. What a despicable, loathsome bag of hot air she is!  (I was going to call her a bitch, but that would be an insult to the fine ladies at Smart Bitches Trashy Books.) Saw the story passed along by Julie Leto on Facebook, so I passed it along, too.  Thanks for fighting the good fight against plagiarism.

  20. Bitter D says:

I love it when we use the power of the internet for good!

  21. Rose says:

Number 1 when I searched! That was fast…

college21: Jdith Griggs certainly wouldn’t have made it through 21 days of college if she’s tried this sort of stunt as a student.

  22. Rose says:

Great, I had a typo when I spelled Judith Griggs. Well, I guess she can try to charge me for editing if she sees this.

  23. Arlene says:

This has already been written up on the Washington Post.

    http://voices.washingtonpost.com/fasterforward/2010/11/cooks_source_masters_new_recip.html

    spamword: voice26
I bet Judith has heard her inner voice 26 times or more saying “What the hell was I thinking?!”

  24. Lizabeth S. Tucker says:

Gotta love this!  When I tried to bring the website up, I got this message (right after a 403 – Forbidden error message):

    Sorry, services are temporarily unavailable.
Intuit Websites services have been temporarily interrupted. We would like to assure you that we are making every effort to restore service as quickly as possible. We know how much this inconveniences you and very much appreciate your patience.

  25. dreadpiraterachel says:

Griggs has a Twitter account created four hours ago: http://twitter.com/JudithGriggs

  26. Sharon says:

LA Times has picked up the story as well.

I feel bad for this silly woman, but only up to a point.  To have done something so stupid unwittingly for so long would be bad enough, but the arrogance and condescension are really what ticked people off and set off this avalanche of retaliation.

    A little humility goes a long way…

  27. Angie says:

Am putting a post together right now; am including a link to the new “griggs” definition.  This woman definitely needs a number of sound whacks with a cluebat.  :/

    Angie

  28. Kel says:

She’s on Twitter, too, so you can bomb her here: http://twitter.com/#!/JudithGriggs

I’m smirking at the comments she’s making, like she’s above it all.  If she was immune to the bashing, she wouldn’t be commenting about how she hopes this “tempest in a teapot” “has all blown over by tomorrow!”

(The first quote is from her personal Twitter account, the second from http://twitter.com/#!/cookssource because I want to give credit where credit is due … unlike some people.)

  29. Scribblerkat says:

Well, I had fun. I posted to Facebook, of course, and received a post in which Ms. Griggs apologizes. Not entirely gracefully, but what the heck? But I was the 160th comment to her apology. Holy cow, what a lovely storm!

  30. Brandi says:

Judith Griggs may have just opened herself up to new vistas of pain—apparently she lifted recipes from Martha Stewart as well as a Disney-owned recipe site…

  31. Kar says:

Oh, I linked the shit out of this.

Funny Anecdote, I Googled myself, or rather my online handle, and found out a site was hosting the typeface I made without my permission. And the Jackwagon had the gall to remove the readme file from the download as well. So, the site got a stern Email. Here’s to hoping I don’t get Griggs’d. (In fact I shared the previous article as well as my own issue on my blog.)

Captcha: english69. If I wasn’t so raged-filled, I’d make something witty for it.

  32. Laurel says:

Y’ALL! Have you checked out the tweets yet? I clicked through the link above

    http://twitter.com/JudithGriggs

    (Tkx, dreadpiraterachel)

and holy hell. The woman was apparently three sheets to the wind when she created her Twitter account. Unhinged. Completely. There is some good ole fashioned crazy up in there.

In all honesty, without that horrific email I would feel sorry for her. I can totally see how this could happen with deadlines, pressure, etc. Not sayin’ that makes it okay, but I can see it. Monica’s response and request were so mild and so…appropriate that I cannot imagine any other response aside from, “You know what? You’re right and you have been really cool about the whole thing. Should not have happened. Thanks for your understanding and we’ll make it right.”

    Problem solved.

Boy did she kick the wrong dog.

  33. Pickle says:

Front and center on my Facebook page, girls!

    Fear the bitchery!

Spamword list38…..it would be easy to come up with 38 reasons that this NEVER should have happened!

  34. Mimi says:

holy cowpies!  go with the google-fu.  on my facebook and the forums i post at…

i predict npr and martha will be on her like white on rice in no time flat.

  35. paksiegurlie says:

I had already posted about this on my live journal so I added the google bomb. Glad to do it.

Also-this story has made the NY Times.

By the time the Disney lawyers get done with Ms Griggs she will be lucky if she has a pot left to piss in.

Bet she wishes she had apologized and paid that $130 now….
