My Bad, You Win: A Samhain Giveaway

by SB Sarah Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 07:43 AM

So last night, I made a tool of myself. Today: you profit from my being a butthead. Hooray!

Last night I was ticked off and cranky and the icing on my small torte of pissypants was that a book I’ve been wanting to buy, Lorelei James’ All Jacked Up, was unavailable still. The Amazon page says that because I’m in the US, I’m not able to buy the book - and I got all indignant and shoved my head up my ass on Twitter (SO amazing how easy it is to do that! Whee!) and thought the problem resided with Samhain.

Lindsey Faber from Samhain kindly emailed me last night to say the problem is with Amazon (THE DEVIL YOU SAY) and while they’ve made requests that the geographic restrictions be corrected, Amazon has not taken care of it. (It is nice, I must say, to have cranio-rectal impacted company, though Amazon isn’t always my first choice for benchmate).

I apologized on Twitter - and I apologize here, as well. I’m sorry.

And for my humble pie (Mmm, pie), you win!

Samhain is giving away 10 books to 10 winners to make up for the fact that Amazon (and I) are in the penalty box for the time being. Just leave a comment with your preferred geographic location OUTSIDE the US (where you’d be able to buy the digital books you want) and you’re entered to win a copy of one of the currently blocked books from Amazon:

Book CoverBook CoverBook Cover

Book CoverBook CoverBook Cover

We’ll pick 10 winners, and those chosen will receive a copy of the book of their choice from that list in the format of their choice, all without DRM or geographic restrictions. Ready, set, go - you’ve got 24 hours.

Me? I’d like to be in Spain. Because currently, it’s siesta time there. And I need a nap after this helping of shamefaced humble pie. (Mmm. Pie.)

I’m currently not permitted to travel anywhere w/o the spouse-creature because men in kilts, or who have big swords or accents, or really broad shoulders and sharp teeth promptly cause a flare up of a disease I have that is known as Turtle Syndrome. Flair ups involve falling on my back and getting stuck here, just like a turtle. Hence the name.

But if I could go… I’ve got an obsession with Venice right now.

I’m a Welshy, born and bred, but that’s the last place I wanna be right. Minnesota winter is drawing close—get me outta here and into somewhere sunny, hot and beachy.

I think, right about now, I would love to be back in Australia, on Cronulla Beach body surfing in the cool, salty water—hunky lifeguards to ogle at, with the husband off fetching me a yummie ice-cream :o)

SQUASH. Yup, that was my day dream being squashed. I glanced out the window and saw the frost settled on the grass. Bummer.

If I’m going to go anywhere, it’s going to be some place warm. Some place with a beach and clean, clear water. Some place where I can lay on said beach and drink in the sun and forget that it is currently 38degrees at home.
Send me to the Bahamas. Give me a tall, cold drink and then leave me alone with my book.

While on a complaint about geographic restrictions, what’s up with Barnes and Noble requiring you to be in the US to download books? Jen said “I’m in Scotland - currently it is misty (that means it’s raining), damp, grey, and from my picture window I can see - nothing - because it’s dark most of the day…. And all the men in kilts tend to be either over sixty and built like scrawny chickens, or wearing long-johns. Although to be fair, very few of them wear kilts at all outside tourist season. And btw, kilts smell of wet sheep.

It’s not all it’s cracked up to be you know!

I would like to go somewhere warm and sunny to read my book - ANYWHERE warm and sunny, but preferably somewhere with no men in kilts.”

Noooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!! Please don’t ruin Cian’s image… of course he is from the 15th century (and of course has perfect white teeth…. he is a druid you know)  Maybe I shouldn’t go to Scotland if all I’m going to be seeing is chicken legs…....

Turkey.  Start in Istanbul, maybe 5 or 6 days in a seriously amazing hotel. I think there’s a luxury chain like Four Seasons in a remodeled former prison. I think fall is a great time to visit there.  I’d invite the in-laws to watch the kids, b/c we could all enjoy the city together. Then the in-laws AND the kids could go home to USA but sweet husband and I would go down Turkish coast on a small boat.  Warm.  Sunny.  Alone.  Blue water.  (although not sure if this is the perfect time for Medit. sailing - maybe stormy?)  A bit of sailing without worrying about little people taking a header into Mediterranean, little people’s life jackets, little people losing a finger in the winches, etc.  I think I’m going to set some scenes in my next book in Istanbul so this is my dream, to see it before I write.

If I must remain on Terra, I believe I’d like to be in Ireland, since that is (in theory) the land of my forefathers. My foremothers were from Germany, so that would be my third choice.

I would like to go pretty much anywhere without a war (or population with reason/habit of taking out frustrations on US tourists) but…

Ukraine (family)

runners up in no particular order: India, Japan, Italy, France, UK, New Zealand, Tasmania, Easter Island, Philippines, Argentina, Ecuador, Chile - particularly Patagonia, Jordan (Petra), Egypt, Belgium, Greece, Turkey, Cambodia

I want to see old growth forest, or terrain that is different or see fiber related things (sheep and weaving and spinning and such) or old structures. I don’t travel well so I may as well dream big.

It’s currently 88F/31C and I could do with a little something hot to read while lying by the pool.

All of you who want to be in Australia right now - try Queensland.  You wouldn’t want to get stuck in Victoria or SA this week, even in your daydreams ...

Me ... I spent November many years ago in Ushaia, at the VERY bottom of Argentina.  (Tierra del Fuego).  T-shirt weather down in the town, yet snow on the glacier an hour’s hike away.  That’s my pick.

(Hope global warming hasn’t got there first.)
