Fayetteville State University has announced that Dr. Sarah S. G. Frantz, Assistant Professor of English and Doctor of Awesome, has been awarded the 2007-2008 Academic Research Grant from the Romance Writers of America.

The $5000 grant provides funding for the academic study of mass market popular romance fiction.

Frantz teaches eighteenth-century and Romantic-era British literature at FSU, as well as popular literature and culture. She has published articles on Jane Austen and popular romance fiction and is currently editing two academic anthologies, one of which examines popular romance fiction from new theoretical perspectives. Frantz also blogs about popular romance fiction at Romancing the Blog and Teach Me Tonight. The research grant will provide summer funding for Frantz to write three academic articles on popular romance fiction.

WORD. UP. Congratulations to Dr. Frantz and mad props to the RWA for recognizing her scholarly research in popular romance fiction.

I work for a college publisher and used to work with Fayetteville.  I contacted Dr. Frantz last year because I was looking for a master’s program that did research on mass market romance and heard that she was in the field.  There is only one other professor in the country that I know of who is interested in genre studies for commericial fiction and he is in the Chicago area.

This is huge, huge, huge.  There are no genre study masters programs as of yet in the US but perhaps because of the this highly coveted grant, there will be soon!

I’m so psyched! Wahoo!

Congrats!

It’d almost be enough to convince me to go back to school, if I could take a class on romance from Dr. Frantz.  FSU is entirely accessible for me. . .

I wrote my senior thesis on popular romance paradigms.  Never thought about getting a grant.  Go girl!  I think it’s a genre that deserves more study.

Congrats Dr. Frantz!

If this were a romance she’d meet her hero while doing this research! He’d be another kind of grant recipient who would roll his eyes at her research while he catalogs more information about his black ferrets.

Congrats!

(begins to plot a change in universities from NC State in Raleigh to Fayetteville - does Fayetteville have a good MALS programme?)

Thanks everyone!  I’d like to thank the Academy for this honor....no, no, that’s not right.

Seriously, I’m very thankful to RWA for the grant and to SB Sarah for posting this info (Laura also posted it to TMT before I could get there to do it).

The articles will get published in the next few years.  There’s a fabulous bibiliography at the Romance Wiki listing all the articles/books/dissertations about romances that we as a scholarly community can find.

Bethany, there’s other scholars out there.  Alas, as I hope I said, FSU is NOT the place to go.  One day maybe I’ll be at a school that does MA and Ph.D. theses, and then we can infect the world with romance scholarship, mwahahahaha!!  But for now, I’d go to the Romance Wiki, look up dissertations, and then search for where those scholars are now and see if those schools have MA programs.  I know Deborah Chappel works with grad students, because I met one.

And Nikki, NO!  Really.  Stay at State.  I love FSU, but it’s really not the place to come, not least of which is because we don’t have any LIS, let alone an MA.

And thanks again, everyone.  I’ll update at Teach Me Tonight as warranted.

Congratulations!
I still remember finding out the English Dept was cancelling the Popular Fiction class I had been looking forward to for 3 years (it was only offered once every 3rd year) because the head of the department decided the class was a waste of department resources.  Of course this is also the guy that opened an English Lit Survey with the pronouncement that “There have been no GREAT women writers” to head off questions on why his syllabus didn’t include any.

I’m happy there are professors like you out there, and organizations like RWA with programs to reward you.

Eli—I once had a professor tell me that there’s *genre* fiction and then there’s *good* fiction.  So sad that these attitudes still exist in the 21st century.
