I am so going to miss Molly Ivins.  They played bits of various interviews that Terry Gross had with her over the years on Fresh Air last night and I had to pull over to the side of the road because I was laughing so hard.

She was such an amazing woman, who stayed so true to her beliefs and had such a wonderful sense of humor. I think that a tribute to her on this website is very meaningful indeed. And the video? Cracked me up and made me cry for women in Texas at the same time!

I knew about the Texas law, but I’d never seen the video.  I’m going to miss Molly so much!

Good Lord - I had no idea about the Texas Penal Code that way...*okay, sorry, but hee hee hee - penal...* That video was hilarious. Molly Ivins, wow, brave. And so were those women at Forbidden Fruit. “Educational Models”, *lol*

My favourite lines:

I haven’t been familiar with Molly Ivins’ work before. Other than this fantastic video, what else has she done about this kind of legislation?

I miss her already.

I don’t normally get really upset when celebrities die, I don’t feel any real personal connection to most people I don’t know.

But when I read the NYT on Wednesday night that she’d died it felt like I’d lost a member of my family. I’ll miss her intelligence, humor and wit. Lord knows when they made her they broke the mold and I don’t know who else will make me laugh when I want to cry like she did (Jon Stewart I suppose but he’s not as folksy although certainly nice to look at)

To lose both Molly Ivins and Ann Richards so close together is simply devastating.  They are two of my heros.  I live in Austin, so I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Ms. Ivins speak, and no one can make you laugh so hard while you fume with anger.

The sodomy law is no longer on the books here; several years ago, a gay couple was actually charged when they were “caught in the act” by a SWAT team who thought they were entering a drug dealer’s appt. (They had the wrong address.) The case went to the Supreme Court, and the law was declared unconstitutional.  After all, the anus isn’t a sexual organ. :)

Warren Chisum remains in our legislature, and is still a moronic bible thumper.

RIP Molly, you and Ann enjoy the margaritas.

There’s a really good speech on YouTube about freedom fighting she gave.

“As you get out there and freedom fight, and raise hell about various issues--of which there is never any shortage--have a good time. Have a good time while you’re fighting for freedom. First of all, [because] we don’t always win, and it might get to be the only fun you’ll ever have, and second of all, it’s a better way to live.”

Awesome, refreshing, gusty, funny way to go about things. Wow. I wish I’d been more aware of her work before.

I was so sad to hear of her death. I’ve enjoyed reading her over the years.  And I have to agree that it takes talent to make someone laugh when they’re fuming with anger.  I experienced that often with her.

And oh, that video!  Priceless!

Molly Ivins was a friend of my mother’s, although I never met her.  Now I really, truly wish I had.  Damn, what a woman.  I want to be her when I grow up, I truly, truly do.
