It’s not so much sizzling in northern coastal Scotland in the winter, but this book is amazing for it’s warmth, the strength of the writing, and the story-within-a-story. As I announced in the Book Club Chat last week, our April Book Club pick is Susanna Kearsley’s The Winter Sea.
Previously published in Canada as ‘Sophia’s Secret,’ and a nominee for both a RITA and a RNA award, this book is emotional, historically fascinating, rich and worth savoring. Here’s the description:
In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown.
Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next bestselling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of Slains Castle, she creates a heroine named for one of her own ancestors and starts to write.
But when she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction, Carrie wonders if she might be dealing with ancestral memory, making her the only living person who knows the truth-the ultimate betrayal-that happened all those years ago, and that knowledge comes very close to destroying her…
This is what happens when romance and historical fiction are married perfectly – plus the story tells of Carrie’s present-day adventures and her character Sophia’s story a well.
As usual, if you use SBTBARE at checkout, you will get a 50% eBook Bucks Rebate at AllRomance.com, the official sponsor of the Sizzling Book Club. You can also buy a copy at Amazon.com, or Book Depository, or wherever the books in your preferred format are sold.
The 50% rebate at AllRomance will be valid from April 1-15, 2011.
I fully recognize that this is a more expensive book to be featuring, and I wouldn’t have chosen it if I didn’t truly think it was worth your reading and discussing. But to help with the sticker shock, I have five paper copies from Sourcebooks AND five digital copies (from yours truly) to give away. All you have to do is leave a comment and let me know which format you prefer. I will announce the winners and have books shipped out asap – or emailed, as the case may be. Contest is open for 24 hours.
Standard disclaimers apply: this giveaway is open to international entrants, though I’m not sure about the logistics of shipping to the International Space Station. I am not being compensated for this giveaway. Void where prohibited. Shading within a garment may occur. Use only in well-ventilated area. PC Load Letter.
I sniffled so obviously when I finished this book, Hubby was worried about me. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, and can join us at the end of April (date and time TBA) to chat about it.
I would love to win a copy. Either format is fine with me.
This sounds like the kind of story I love. So yes, I’d love to win a copy and both format is OK with me.
I would love a copy, preferably in dead tree format!
Looks like a very good read! I’ve been having to study lately instead of reading anything else—this would be perfect to take a break from insurance classes with! I have a nook and a nookcolor, so a digital copy would be wonderful (and I can’t get stuff shipped to my house, unless it fits in a tiny square mailbox, which nothing ever does).
This book sounds fascinating!
I really want a copy. Paper preferred but I’ll take an ecopy if I can’t get paper. 🙂
This sounds like a fascinating book. I’d love a copy – whichever format is more readily available works for me.
I would also love to win a copy! Either format would be amazing (though I’ve a slight preference for digital).
I’m looking forward to this chat! I hope the time will work for me (the last few haven’t, sadly). *fingers crossed*
I LOVE this story and author! She is a new find for me this year.
I would like the ebook.
I’d love a paper copy so I can lend it to my cousin after I’ve read it, but will take e if it’s all that’s left.
i’d love any copy of this book, if there are any left! it sounds wonderful!
I would love a copy of this book. I’d prefer the ebook version, but paper works for me too.
I would love a paper copy of this book. I agree that it looks like a great read. Can’t wait!
I would love a paper copy of this book. I haven’t read a good historical in a while and I’m a sucker for anything involving Scottish men in kilts.
This book does look rather interesting, and I love “stories within stories” if they’re pulled off well (and since it’s an SB book club pick, I’m guessing this one is). The cover is gorgeous as well, if I saw it on a shelf, I’d nab it up to look.
Contest wise, I’d prefer a digital copy (but won’t say no do a paper copy if that’s what’s available). Thanks!
This sounds like a great book and I’d take a copy in paper.
I wonder if they read books on the ISS (International Space Station) on Kindle or laptops. Of course with the view they have I’m not sure if I’d do a lot of reading up there.
I’d love to win a paper copy. Thank you!! Looking forward to the discussion at the end of April.
I would love a paper copy. Sounds like a great book.
This book sounds fairly awesome. I’m intrigued to know the secret betrayal….guess that’s what good cover copy is supposed to do.
I prefer digital to “dead tree”, but only slightly.
Thanks!
I can’t even find it at my usual bookseller… but will keep looking if I cannot win an e-book. Please!!!
I love love love this book. And the author. She writes such beautiful stories. The other book of hers I absolutely adore is Marianna. I’m still trying to go through her backlist. I would love to win an ebook copy.
I would love a paper copy of this one, it’s been on my Amazon wish-list for few months now.
I’d love a digital copy!
This looks like a wonderful read and I’d love to be entered in the contest. Either format is fine but order of preference:
digital
print
Thanks!!
Pamala
I’ve been DYING to read this in any format available!
I am currently reading this book on Kobo, just want to say it is a great pick!
I’d love to win a papercopy.
I just found this blog and am so excited! Would love to win a copy. Prefer ebook, but either format is fine with me!
Have heard about this book more than once before it got picked for the book club. I would love a paper copy. =)
Paper, please, so I can share with my MIL. But I like digital too, so whichever! Thanks for doing the giveaway.
Oh, I have been wanting to read this! I’d like the ebook version, if I win.
Thanks for the contest!
Paper copy please! Thanks for the giveaway!
It looks lovely! I’d prefer a paper copy, but an ebook format is fine too.
I would love a copy in any format – Amazon.co.uk doesn’t seem to have this one in Kindle format and it’d be awesome to be able to read it.
Like so many others I would love to read this book. It’s on my list but I confess I’ve been holding back because of the price. I would be grateful for either format.
Oooh, I’ve been wanting to read this book! I would love a copy, in either format. 🙂
I’ve really enjoyed the other books that I’ve read by Susanna Kearsley, so I’d love to win a copy of this one. Hardcopy works better for me.
This sounds like a great pick! Either paper or ebook work for me.
Boy, I’d love to win a copy (if the book gods are favorable)! Make mine a hardcopy, please!
“The Winter Sea” has been appearing in my Amazon recommendations, and this would be the perfect chance to read it. Paper copy, please.
Oooh, I’d love a copy! Preferrably digital, if possible.
