Title: The Legend of the Werestag
Author: Tessa Dare
Publication Info: Samhain Publishing May 2009, ISBN: 9781605045283
Genre: Historical: European

Werestag: German for Castle Pants I admit, I am not a fan of the novella. I think novellas, short stories, and book length fiction are very different things, and a writer who has strength in one may not have strength in the others. While anthologies are often the cup-of-oh-yes-please for some readers, they aren’t often my preference simply because the short format can cut the very parts I like best: building tension, character development, and clever, interesting dialogue. Often the dialogue is sacrificed for backstory information, when it should be revealed through the dialogue. The development of characters and tension between them is often the minority against the plot contained in the narrative, which due to too much complexity or lack of familiarity with the format, demands the majority of the page. Because I’m disappointed more often than not, I shy away from novellas.

It is a damn good thing I didn’t when it came to Tessa Dare’s “The Legend of the Werestag.” Despite the very heavy paranormal cues in the title, this is a historical novella with a perfect compliment of dialogue, sexual and emotional tension, characters who are flawed and real, and a happy ending that is believable and so welcome. I rooted for the protagonists, I was very curious about the story, and I was disappointed by the fact that it was over. Fortunately for me, Tessa Dare has historical novels coming out this year so, thanks to this novella, I’m an eager reader waiting for more.

I told you Tessa Dare was not to be missed!
And yes, the turret-party-in-my-pants cover rocks!

Wow, yeah that cover is rather phallic.  I was going to say “a wee bit phallic,” but there’s nothing wee about that turret.

I haven’t read Tessa Dare before, but I’ll check out her work.

This is an e-book.

It is also Tessa’s first published work, and the harbinger of many more great things to come.

I’ve read this as well and it is really awesome.

(Er, I add belatedly that I am a completely and utterly objective reader, seeing as how Tessa’s my critique partner and all.)

I’m not a big novella person either but now I may be. Thanks. Love that cover too.

Tessa is a WONDERFUL writer! I was lucky enough to judge her in a contest a while back (it was the best contest entry I’ve ever read). I got a chance to read the whole draft of what is now her first book and I can tell you: You’re all in for a treat! She has an amazing voice, and for me, that says it all.

I haven’t read this one, but if it’s half as good as GOTH (her first print book out in July), it’s a keeper!!!

Add her to your instant buy list. And unlike CM, this is completely unbiased.

I may not be unbiased, but I am right to agree with the reviewer that Tessa masterfully blends dialogue, emotional and sexual tension. I’ve read a lot of Tessa Dare, and the woman never ceases to amaze and inspire me. Congratulations, Tessa on your first published work. The first of many amazing reads to come!

I read an excerpt of this a while back, when DA Jane was twittering about it; if it had been available then, I would have bought it immediately.  (This despite me being mostly a print book reader—it usually takes me ages to get around to reading anything I buy to read on the laptop.)  I wanted the rest of the story right away!  The hero, he DOES smolder, and I felt an immediate affinity with the heroine.  Fabulous voice, as others have said.

Thanks for the reminder—off to the Samhain store!

Thanks for the review.  I’m definitely going to have to check this out.  I’ve already been eagerly eyeing the trilogy she has coming out in print this August.

Waaaah!  May 12!?!  Two more whole weeks I have to wait?!?  Jeez, whatever happened to the “instant gratification” part of ebooks.

Cecily gave a despairing sniff.

A ‘despairing sniff’?  Great writing?  Come on!  I’m prepared to believe that, overall, it is well written, but that sentence is not very convincing proof of the fact.

Whew! Glad I wasn’t the only one who saw a turgid turret.

I was afraid I had penis vision or something! “Egads, they’re everywhere!”

Werestag.

Am I the only one who did a silent double-take and now, despite having been assured the book is fabulous, will spend the rest of my evening thinking: “Werestag. Mphmh. Hahahahaha.”

I’m not even sure what I envision when I summon the word. Only that it’s hilarious.

Werestag. As if the turret wasn’t subtle enough. It’s like making a movie about a hustler and naming him Joe Buck. (Oh, wait…)
