Words Move Me: A Celebration and Contest

by SB Sarah Monday, November 30, 2009 at 01:39 AM

Sony Style has a very cool page called Words Move Me, where users submit short passages from written works that they find memorable, moving, or personally important. They’ve come up with a rather neat promotion and have asked me to take part in helping spread the word about Words Move Me.

Oh look! A widget! Here are some examples:

So let’s get to celebrating the words that move us and have us a contest!

I love the concept of this contest.

Now I need to try and stay away from my the computer or I will spend all day with this!

Thanks for the generous donation of your “prize” too!

Drat. Now I have to dig a book out of storage! It’s been languishing in a box somewhere since we moved.

What a wonderful contest. Fun to revisit favorite books and a Sony is what my daughter wants for Christmas.

Quick clarify: is it okay if they’re not from the romance genre? I love this site and yet romance novels still don’t send me, go figure.

Whole lot of SBTB’s out there. What I’ve enjoyed most, in addition to reading the other quotes, is dragging out my books and searching for the quotes I’ve always loved. Thanks, SB Sarah!

And being able to see everyone’s contributions is so great…

“If he had just taught me to ride the damn thing I would have had to run him over.  Twice.”  from Shooting Elvis by Robert Evrez.  Not a romance at all but an awesome Punk Noir book that lives in my heart to this day.

From To Kill a Mockingbird:

I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.  It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.  You rarely win, but sometimes you do.  ~

Can I get a widget like yours??

PS. I’ve just been writing out my favourite quotes, not all are romance.  Is that ok?

What a great contest! The one I submitted I’ve had on my desk for a very , very long time-amid others that have curled edges;)

The soul should always stand ajar, ready to welcome the ecstatic experience.”~Emily Dickinson, Amercican poet

So I have gotten sucked into this contest, and am finding lots of quotes, but the thing is so short they all get cut off, also apparently they don’t like some of the naughty words I used. So I’ll share here “Linda Howard
“Do you want to know why men name their penis? So the most important decisions in their life aren’t made by a stranger.”

I can’t get registered - it keeps telling me there’s been an error but won’t tell me what it is. :( Going to try again tomorrow because I have some wonderful Terry Pratchet quotes to enter.

There is usually at least 1 good quote, often more, on every page of every Terry Pratchett book. No lie.

For example:“She was content to let self-esteem do the work of self-respect.”  Think about that one. We all know someone like that, don’t we?

It’s such a pity I am a native Russian speaker, so most of the books I’ve read and love are in Russian. :( Go Russian classics! XD

OMG - what a time suck!

This is an amazing idea.  I had to tear myself away from the site - but I’ll go back again tomorrow!

Kinsey - is your password 8 letters long?  that was my problem, I used one of my failsafe passwords which was only 7 letters long.  Also nothing but numbers and letters are allowed and I know some people put in symbols.

I’m rather excited about this.  Whenever I find awesome quotes, I always want to write them down somewhere, and now I can!  Well within 250 characters.

In case anyone else was having a hard time getting the search to work:

I have to admit this is a wonderful time sink. Makes me want to run out, grab a bunch of books and read and read and read. Then read some more.

spam word: behind35
That must mean that I must read 35 more books before the end of the year. I’m really behind and I think I’m screwed unless I’m reading novellas. Ah, but what I wonderful holiday gift it would be if only I had the time.

Being dead didn’t make Jack Mercy less of a son of a bitch.  One week of dead didn’t offset sixty-eight years of living mean.  Plenty of the people gathered by his grave would be happy to say so.

This is the first line of Nora Roberts’ Montana Sky.  For me it means treat others well because once you’re dead it’s too late to make up for it.
